I know who I’d prefer in the squad.
Similarly I would prefer Zaha to e.g Gray and McArthur to Lerma.
I’m not seeking to be critical as I know it’s problematic for the club in terms of recruitment, but it’s difficult to reach any conclusion other than the squad is now weaker than last season and without significant funds it’s difficult to see how this can be redressed.

I don’t agree with you.

A prime McArthur was a good player. But we haven’t been close to having that player for over two years. The blokes just retired! Are you seriously saying a retired McArthur is better than a Lerma in his prime? I’m sorry, but I don’t agree with that notion.

Zaha would be a big miss for 13/14 clubs in the division. Replacing him like for like may be impossible for us and our spending power. What we have to do now is build a “team” of talents rather than rely on a single player all the time. Who knows, that may make us a better team without Zaha.

What a disappointing way to end your Palace legacy.

Whole thing seems off though, signed a new 1 year extension in January & he's not far off being 37, what does he expect to happen?

I personally think Guaita has been a great keeper for us however Johnson is a little bit better and the back 4 trust him more.

Well said Ouzo.

My immediate reaction was quite literally ‘f**k ‘im’ as I took everything at face value.

Has been a very good for us, it’s now Right Back and Striker however the previous long running saga was the never ending search for a decent keeper which ended with Vinnie’s arrival.

Sounds as though there must be more to it and if not very bizarre. I think Johnstones an improvement must say but whole thing would be a very sad end to what was a very good relationship in my eyes.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

I was really surprised to hear how VG has reacted to a bit of competition.

If he was as good as he thinks he is then he would want to stay and fight for his place to prove this.

SJ is a better all round keeper and I think our back 4 feels the same way and seem far more confident with him behind them.

I personally would drop VG into the reserves so as not to affect the team morale and lets hope we can get someone else in to give the position competition.

Bye bye VG...time to move on.

According to some rumours he’s been angling to go for some time and wants to return home to Spain, although never expected this.

He was pretty much unchallenged for the number 1 spot until recently so maybe this was the catalyst to kick it all off, however his behaviour as a professional, if true, is very disappointing.

Hard to fault VC’s performances on the whole, he’s been solid, but, Johnstone has been superb and taken his chance when it came.

It stinks of bad attitude and if that’s the case we don’t need him. Johnstone could get injured on Saturday and he’ll back in and it would be his shirt to lose.

It does leave us short as we’d urgently need a back up keeper. Not good.

It is possible he signed the 1 year deal so the club would get a few bob when they sold him but now the club have refused to sell him unless they get someone else in.

The irony is that he got injured so was replaced. Does he think Johnstone is superman. For nothing but spite when he goes Johnstone gets a little knock and our no3 comes in. Feel the karma vin.

I assume we are not paying him as he is not playing.

Get rid as no place for someone who clearly reckons he is bigger than the team.

So Johnstone is perfectly good enough to be a mid-table Prem number 1. We can set and forget with him.

For a number 2, McCarthy is one of the few keepers who falls into the following bracket:

- Isn't number 1 elsewhere
- Isn't number 2 at a bigger club
- Is good enough as a Palace number 2 (people on here will moan, but he was a PL number 1 for 3 of the last 4 years - 11th, 15th, 15th).
- Is at a club that will be willing to let him go (Saints have all their chips in Bazunu's basket, signed a new keeper yesterday, and McCarthy is a luxury number 2 in the Championship).

He'll cost sod all money and ticks a lot of boxes.

Listen to quite a bit of Ben Foster's stuff and he regularly talks about how helpful it is to have a goalkeeping group with a clear No.1, No.2, No.3. Everyone knows where they stand and it's harmonious.

It makes a lot of sense...

No I wasn't suggesting that a retired McArthur is better than Lerma.
But a prime McArthur, even the one who was excellent in Vieira's first season, in my opinion is superior to Lerma.
The broader point I was making related to replacing players with inferior players.
In my view the squad may well be weaker this season than last season.Gray and Adams for example, would not be signings to meet the club's aspiration to get into the top 10.
I don't see it is a controversial view, or one that is critical of the club.
How do you replace Zaha, Olise and possibly one of the centre backs with our resources?
At the moment we're in a position that Ayew and Schlupp( who many fans wanted to see left out) are key players for us.
Not my view as they are reliable players who have served the club well.
However, we shouldn't be in a position where Ayew is arguably our best option for any of the front 3 roles such is the paucity of alternatives.

Again I’m not sure I agree. Olise is injured. He hasn’t left yet. For now, he’s a palace player and he should recover just fine. Having to work around injuries is part of football. You can’t expect the club to replace Olise before he’s even left.

And I don’t think Lerma is a million miles off McArthur. Actually, I feel as though people should reserve judgment on that until they have seen how he performs in our colours.

We haven’t sold any centre backs either. I mean, your argument seems to be, IF we sell everyone and buy bad players then we are in trouble. We haven’t sold anyone yet, and so we haven’t had to show how well we can replace them.

There are just too many IFS in your point. Who said we are after Che Adams? If we believe everything that’s printed, then we are after a whole bunch of good strikers. Who knows…we might get a good one! IF we’re lucky lol

We'll have to agree to disagree.
McArthur has been one of our best and most consistent performers in the Premier League, Zaha one of our best ever players.
Neither are easy to replace,
Roy himself has said how thin the squad is and has said the club know there's a lot of work to do in this window.
However, it's fair to reserve final judgement until the window is closed to establish who has joined/left.
