Edouard isn't terrible, and he proves (every other week at the min) that he can score. He often wants too long on the ball and doesn't get a shot away, but when he does, they often go in.

I think the issue with him is that we are NOT performing at a level where we can do without 1 player working their socks off.

He doesn't put himself about, or run the channels, and only really comes alive when he has the ball at his feet facing goal.

For me, our next foray into the striker market needs to be a worker. Less emphasis on the goal scoring, because I feel that with a more combative front man, we'd have more goals spread across the team.

There have been plenty of good strikers with these attributes. Jimmy Greaves, Kevin Phillips, Tony Cottee for starters. Supply the ball into the box and watch them perform.
Our problem is lack of overlaps and support in wide areas, which should be provided by full backs who can get up and down. Only Olise looks like a player who is natural to wing play, and a lot of our play goes through the centre. Perhaps Hodgson is harkening back to Alf Ramsey's wingless wonders as a tactical strategy.

I have to say I think those now critiquing the way he finished for the goal are being especially harsh - we're not talking Benteke shinning it in, or some fluke bounce.

He was gifted an opportunity but that was by no means a simple tap in - he took on the defender, little step over, knocked it wide to set up the angle and finished nicely to the back post. Watching it from behind the goal, looks like a quality finish!

It was a good goal and he showed presence of mind. He had one other chance - which he should have got. However, he did nothing basically for the whole match. The reason fans are pissed off with him is exactly that. He's the epitome of a luxury player. But, yes, more useful than Benteke - anyone is.
The other thing he needs to do is look across the line and time his runs. He could have scored a hat full of goals if he wasn't, completely avoidably, offside all season. Again, looks incredibly lazy to the fans.

It’s not really a criticism, they all count and I don’t think anyone cares how it went in, it’s just a fact, he clearly scuffed it and was lucky it bobbled over the defenders leg.

With the lack of chances created by our anaemic and defence minded midfield even Haaland would struggle - and he has missed some sitters.

Edouard has talent but until we address the supply problem you can't blame him - perhaps you would prefer Mateta to have a starting place?

Edouard is reported to be in West Ham's sights and if he goes we may see how good (or not) he is.

Whilst I don’t disagree that he’s our best forward, I think you’re being quite easy on him with the above - against Luton for example, he was incredibly wasteful in the final third and a big part of why we lost the game.

He’s scored 6 goals from an xG of 4.8 which suggests he’s basically an average finisher.

Given how little he offers in the rest of his game - poor with his back to goal and creates next to nothing for his teammates - he needs to at least keep up that kind of scoring rate to justify his place in the team.

Best of a bad bunch and I think he could be a semi-decent goalscorer, but the days of strikers walking around for 89 mins and then popping up with the odd goal are gone - we could really do with someone a lot more complete leading the line.

Is the correct answer.

Walking around and scoring the winner in the 90th min I am happy with . He is the best we have got so lets supporting him rather than slag him off . If not he will want to leave , to maybe West Ham , then who are we left with JPM , how sad is that .

His goals are better than his expected goals and being an average premier league striker is bad. Got it.

I guess reading comprehension is not a strong point.

He’s an average finisher - there’s a bit more to being a forward than that.

The man is on course* for about 15 goals in a team without its two main chance creators, he's better for goals V xG than Haaland, Watkins and Isak, among others, this season.

Outside of goalscoring, at which he's rather good, Haaland is fairly average. But I'd still take him :-)

And critically, Edouard's playing in a team that hasn't had its two main creative outlets -- and has played super defensively with a low block -- all season.

Strikers are judged first on goals, and on that simple metric the data you selected say he's above average.

I accept he lacks a bit as an all round player. But he's doing well this season on metric number 1.

I will also accept I misrepresented you a bit, but the thrust of your comments is, for me, wrong.

*I don't say he'll keep up his scoring rate but who knows. Maybe he'll even improve it with Eze and Olise both playing

That's a bit harsh on him; he scored 57 in 94 for Celtic. Given the usual caveats about the level of the opposition the goal is the same size. If he was given the opportunity to take free kicks and penalties, as he did at Celtic, he'd get a few more.
