I passed mine two weeks ago too! I'm looking at getting a Toyota Yaris as my first car. Cheap to tax, insure and.....ulez compliant.

congrats to you mate. I never thought I wanted to drive a car (had a full bike license since 2000) but since passing I just want to get out there in my little motor.

At the grand age of 52 I have passed my driving test and am now chewing at the bit to get my 1st car.

I have a short list which all have around 1 litre engines due to the ridiculous prices insurance companies are quoting.

Also it will only be used for the commute and social so I don't really need a mile muncher.

The cars I'm looking at are

Citroen C3
Ford fiesta
Peugeot 208
Renault Clio
and my personal favourite
Alfa Romeo Mito (although it doesn't get brilliant reviews for reliability).

Does anyone have experience of these cars and give any advice on good/bad points to help me choose?

My budget is around £3000-£4000 and the insurance quotes I'm getting are around £2000 fully comp!!!!!

I did look at the Mini One but being a 1.4L the quotes are £2500+

Any help and advice would be most welcome

I take it nobody told you about French cars then. For my children I bought a panda. Made of cheese held together with spaghetti but it actually did keep going and was cheap to run and insure. My sensible head would say Fabia or i10.

French and Italian cars don't have a particularly good reputation for reliability and in your position I would go for the Ford as they are cheap to repair if anything goes wrong

My advice would be-

Ford Fiesta or a Toyota Yaris -
Don't go near the Citroen / Peugeot / Renault in terms of reliability / maintenance costs.

I have 2 kids, one 20 & one 18 if they ever get their arsenals into gear & start taking driving lessons any car they get will almost certainly be one of those 2.

Hope it helps.

My son just passed his test, aged 27. I have given him my i10 automatic. 1200 engine. I couldn’t believe insurance cost, saved a bit by putting me as named driver but still over £1300

I agree. From what I've gathered from insurance quotes its all about the engine size. The 1 litre Mito I like is over £500 cheaper than the 1.4 litre version. Sure the 1.4 will be quicker all round but I'm 52 now and have no interest in trying to convince ladies I have a big d**k. My need for speed has been replaced by an ache for cake...

Yes the fiesta’s are only one litre, but the mild hybrid is an extra battery that stores energy and gives it that extra little zip so it doesn’t feel sluggish like an old one litre car would’ve been back in the day. I suppose being an old bugger myself would make the insurance cheaper as well

Sorry to bore you with the technicals, i haven’t got a clue really, but I did do my homework a bit first as it’s the first time I’ve ever splashed out on a new car and I did work for Fords at the time

Do you have a garage to keep the car in? If so why not look at getting a classic car which if over 40 years old has no car tax and is ULEZ exempt plus classic car insurance is really cheap?

Isn't it turbocharged too/ Back in the day they used to reckon that turbocharging was the equivalent of adding 50% to the non turbocharged equivalent.

Wifey has a 1.0 Seat Ibiza which is very nippy

I have a nice 2012 Nissan Micra manual 1.2 owned since new for sale at the moment. Full service history and just had a new heater box put in and air con re-gassed.
Only £35.00 road tax and 9 months mot. It's a nice car and is probably cheap to insure for you.
