I have a nice 2012 Nissan Micra manual 1.2 owned since new for sale at the moment. Full service history and just had a new heater box put in and air con re-gassed.
Only £35.00 road tax and 9 months mot. It's a nice car and is probably cheap to insure for you.

That could be a great option..

Isn't it turbocharged too/ Back in the day they used to reckon that turbocharging was the equivalent of adding 50% to the non turbocharged equivalent.

Wifey has a 1.0 Seat Ibiza which is very nippy

Yes it does have a turbo, which obviously helps on the nippy front as well

Funny this topic was raised as it was exactly 50 years ago that I passed my test. Monday 10 Sept 1973.

Bought a 1970 Mini Clubman 2 days later and drove down on holiday 200 miles to Devon on the Saturday.

( crap car as it had the distributor at the front of the engine and shorted whenever it rained ).

Ditto (the shorting in the rain with the distributor at the front i.e. virtually the same engine as yours) with my first car, a 1967 ('E' Reg.) Austin 1100, bought for £100 after I passed my test on 17 August 1977, aged 17. I therefore always carried a can of WD-40 or Damp Start with me. The joy of cars back then was the ability to maintain them yourself and sort out the majority of problems. One little tip that was a game-changer in the cooler months was to cover the engine with a blanket overnight. From that day on, the car never failed to start first time, even on the dampest, coldest mornings. I realise this advice probably comes a bit too late for you though!

Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes)

I'd agree with this 25 years ago. All Euro cars had to man up in the face of superior Japanese cars. Eventually they did. Ford have been a reliable and cheap to maintain brand since the introduction of the Focus. My wife's 09 Fiesta has been a diamond and with 130,000 miles on the clock retains the tight and responsive feel of a much newer car.

I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything.

I know mate, cars I had or by the time I’d finished with them were never worth much.

When I was learning to drive back in 81, i yearned for a silver Capri like Bodies on the professionals, I ended up with my uncles mk 3 Cortina!! I never did get a capri which I’ve always been a bit gutted about.
