On ITV news today they said that he took Palace to their first FA Cup final. I think Steve Coppell might be a bit peeved at that.

Unbelievable how they can get something so wrong

A great man manager and coach who gave Palace and England some great times and memories.
He is tainted by his second spell with us where it was all about the money and nothing more and as someone else said - he was a bit of a chancer, which tarnished the good bits.
A real character though and talented way ahead of his time.

He must have been good: he won trophies with Spurs.

I have very mixed feelings about Venables however as mad as it sounds the seventies were truly great times to be a Palace fan. Despite the successive relegation’s Big Mal put the club on the map and Venables continued it until his inevitable departure to QPR who had been courting him for sometime. The midweek visit to Wrexham will forever stay in the memory of all of us that were there. You really had to have lived through it to understand why it was great fun particularly if you were a teenager through the seventies.

My god ..
Those were the days...
Sad to hear of his death and never imagined he was that old ...
Seems wierd now...
That magical night when we beat Burnley in front of a massive crowd was in my eyes our best ever promotion ...
Just lovely , tears in my eyes as an eighteen year old with an old school silk scarf tied around my wrist f***ed up on Pernod and Grolsch ..
On the pitch going mental with Micky Arthurs , my brother and Denny Warren...
Gotta say my favourite times looking back...
Thanks for the good times El Tel...
Shame you went elsewhere ...
There is a newly posted video from the old Thames tv on youtube about Venables and Hilaire (Legend) going to Holland for a pre season and it is just brilliant..
Can anybody find it for us and do a link ...
Think many of a generation would love it...
Wrexham , Orient away and Promotion against Burnley are in my head forever..

When my Mrs told me on Sunday that a former Palace manager had died, I asked who? can't remember she said, but ex Spurs and England. I said Mullery, but no such luck.

Perhaps it was a mass delusion and never actually happened. I was sure Ian Wright played for Palace but he doesn't seem to think so.

Ian Wright seems to have a problem with Palace, the club that took him from obscurity to fame and fortune ....
Seems to this day to have real bitterness for us ...
Unlike (by all accounts) his mother who has Palace stuff all over and wont have anything ARSEnal in her place...
You can see to this day he has no respect for Palace as he constantly disregards them on MOTD and his demeanour speaks volumes.

yes he was arguably both Palace's best manager and also the worst - the second spell he was an absolute disgrace.
Got paid for a full year upfront (£1m after tax) , left after 6 months and then tried to sue the club for the remaining years of his contract.

Is that correct? I know his second spell was a disaster, but I thought he actually did us a favour in the end and walked away without us having to pay up his contract
