In theory this opens the door to any commercial organisation setting up a rival league in Europe. It could end up like the mess that is boxing, with numerous competing championships. As it would be outside the FIFA/UEFA sanctioned organisation they could also change the laws if they wished. Would they get referees on board? Would the UK government ban clubs from breaking away? Would fans accept a breakaway?

In the end it comes down to greed for money and power of the top clubs, some of whom have little respect for the heart and soul of the beautiful game.

Sit tight. VAR are still reviewing.
Agree with original post. Let them go. Would open things up nicely.
They talk about the Big Six. What about Newcastle?

That's already been mentioned today, seems they are going to 'ban' any British club from joining, isn't that what the ESL just won a court ruling about, basically restraint of competition?

The government have said they'll prevent British teams joining though it's not clear how.
Man United (and Bayern Munich) have already said they're not interested. That could change of course if it happens and the money involved is irresistible.

Exactly any attempt to ban clubs from forming a break away competition would ultimately fail in court it's a restraint on trade.

I think the only thing that UEFA and the FA could do is throw them out of their own competitions.

Every organisation has rules I can't see how a court would stop the FA from kicking out the big 6 if they refused to obey the rules. The issue today was they tried to stop them forming a breakaway competition.

So either they compromise which means giving the big 6 what they want or they ask them to leave the PL and UEFA which I doubt the big 6 would be bothered by anyway.

FYI
The big 6 want to run their own rigged game it doesn't mean that their own fans agree with that, many of them don't.

An away season ticket is going to be an expensive venture for the fans if you fancy one.

And, unfortunately, that could likely backfire. The ESL is proposing a competition to go on top of the domestic leagues, clubs get thrown out of the domestic leagues as a punishment, and those clubs get the original season-long European Super League that they always wanted.

Win the battle but lose the war and all that.

I don't really see how UEFA wrangle their way out of this one. This could very easily end up like golf where LIV and PGA run side by side with different competitors.

Agreed. I think for the rest of us football fans there is no good solution. UEFA could cave and as a price of staying in the Champions League the big clubs get their way or they let them go. Either way it's not good for football as the money men win.

And that's where the TV rights come in with the money going to the big boys of course.

So most of the big European clubs have issued statements that they are not interested in the ESL. So that's it then, a dead duck or perhaps a league for minor countries and clubs.

Do not believe it.

The mistake the clubs made last time was to embrace the idea to quickly and too eagerly upsetting their fans with zero consultation.

I still believe it will happen but they will be more cautious now. In the next 2/3 years expect to see weasel statements from the big clubs drip fed that they don't really want to join but as their competitors have.....

It's going happen and it will be an Old Boy network. Never mind what the current idea is they will change that later to ensure it favours them. And don't be surprised when they start inviting clubs outside of Europe to join.

Damn them to hell.

Arsenal and Palace have confirmed they won’t be joining any Super League and will play in FIFA competitions only.
