I thought at the time Calvert Lewin was very calm while waiting an age for the decision. His departure was exceptionally graceful, which is rare. Probably because he was in a state of shock at such a poor decision.

I thought it was a red - no intent in it, but just a terrible tackling technique which is undoubtedly dangerous - he only made slight contact with Clyne and still managed to injure him, if he'd made any sort of proper contact it would have done real damage.

Typically 'strikers challenge', but still dangerous.

just for a change, I actually felt a bit sorry for the ref here.
I think it was a foul and maybe worthy of a yellow but once he has been told to take another look he has no other choice but to give a red or stay with no foul. I believe he cant say yes foul and a yellow in this situation.

Amazing how we all seen the same thing and we all have different thoughts on it.

I still think VAR and the ref made correct decisions.

There is was thinking it was a reckless challenge with his studs raised. How silly am I :-)

Indeed very silly if they showed a still of every tackle in football you could make it look bad at some point

They can’t magically make your studs point outwards at shin height though - whether you think it’s a red card or not, it’s an awful technique to be making a tackle.

I think (I may be wrong) the reason the appeal was upheld was because it wasn't actually a tackle but the player (CL) attempting to bring the loose ball under control .Clyne just arrived on the scene as he was wrapping his boot around the ball ,though granted he made a clumsy mess of it . Take Clyne out of the picture and Calvert -Lewin would be making exactly the same movement in getting the ball .
Had Clyne been in possession and CL had done what he did as a tackle then no question its a red . You have to look at the whole incident not just one picture .

And we still need a striker

Exactly this!!

I cant believe there’s still anyone out there that thinks it’s a sending off, I know he’s studs are showing, but you can see what he was trying to do, he was just trying to wrap his foot round the ball, he didn’t go in with any force and it wasn’t reckless. If VAR is not sorted, the game will be non contact soon because players will be frightened to tackle because every challenge will be slowed down or paused at point of contact so everyone can scream ‘his studs were showing’ or ‘he was out of control’

Don't really agree - why exactly is it not a tackle? That feels completely subjective.

He's stretching for a loose ball that is not in his control, and raises his studs into an opposing player as a result - no massive amount of contact, but it's dangerous, as evidenced by Clyne's reaction.

If you land your studs midway up someone's shinpads, it's nearly always going to be a sending off, regardless of intent or much else.

If you want to avoid an allegation of your studs showing, maybe don't lead with them.

If you had a still of every tackle in the premier league this season, how many of them do you think would be able to show someone's studs landing halfway up their opponent's shins?

It's much less than 1% of tackles, and in nearly all cases will result in a red card - let's not pretend this is applicable to every challenge.

How many tackles can produce a still like this?

His foot has gone past the ball, is raised off the ground, stud-first with a straight leg - there is plenty to moan about with VAR, but I don't particularly have an issue with this decision.
