In the early 70s a mate and I got their autographs at Euston on their way up north somewhere - they were all very friendly, Terry Mancini was full of jokes, but the best of all was Dave Clement who was very kind and made sure everyone signed for us. It was sad how his story ended.

I went to the 1990 fixture at their place (https://www.worldfootball.net/report/premier-league-1990-1991-queens-park-rangers-crystal-palace/) and Stan Bowles was in the players' lounge after the match. Full of energy and reminiscing with the QPR faithful. Weirdly, so was Russ Abbott! A fantastic talent - you only have to watch some reruns of the The Big Match to see how good he was. He always seemed to get mentioned when different England managers overlooked the likes of Hoddle, Le Tissier, and Gascoigne in his later years.

He was a very good footballer with a lot of character, sadly not too many like that these days. QPR were a fine team to watch in the 70s and, as monkey wrote, they came very close to toppling Liverpool off the top. I like the story Martin Samuel quoted in the Times today: "enrolled at Gamblers Anonymous, met a bloke on the way into his first meeting and struck a bet on how long he would last". RIP
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
