Interesting one From the BBS 'questions to the board' forum - they (CpFC2010) were asked about teams around us strengthening. Here's the response: If we are sitting around watching other teams buy players who are no better than what we have already for £5m transfer fees on £2m a year wages on 4 year contracts then that doesnt bother me. We will always put sound business practice and the long term security of CPFC ahead of panic purchases. We will strengthen the squad but we will not be ripped off. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm quite happy with that attitude. So we can deduce from that they think Cameron Jerome is the equal of Long or Jelavic. I see. Honestly, no. If that is what they think then my comment about the board needing to stay out of football matters is bang on. And no, I'm not happy with an attitude that will get us relegated.
So putting Jelavic and Long to one side (for the record I think you have to conisder if either would be effective in the role we have for them rather than focus solely on whether they are "better" than what we have) would people advocate paying a Championship centre-back, already overpaid at Blackburn on £32,000 per week, £50k per week as well as the £5million - £6million fee being demanded? Given that the board know the difference in revenue between the divisions better than anyone yet are still of a view they won't be held to ransom by perceived desperation to remain in the PL, is it really an attitude you are comfortable condemning? Similarly are people not being more than a little selective with their memories? It's still relevant how far we've had to come and how close we came to not existing, no matter how tired people are of hearing it.

I think we are waiting to do all of our deals on the last day and hopefully break our own record of 11 in one day.

Edited by sydtheeagle (23 Jan 2014 9.13pm) Agree with you on both points!! Yep Kenny Brown will also go down in my opinion as one of our best ever loans. In the 7 or 8 games he played as a left back he had a knack of scoring some thunderous goals with that left foot of his. Two of them were against Millwall and Charlton so he endeared himself to the Palace fans straight away!

On the non-playing side they've done what's required to bring the ground up to Premiership requirements; they had no choice but to do that so it's not astute. I believe some improvements have been made to facilities generally and if so, that would be a sensible step. But it's not astute as it so obviously needed doing that only a fool would not have done so. All in all, our owners have done a good, professional, competent job off the pitch. Astuteness not really required; an idiot can tell most of our facilities are paleolithic and that negatively impacts prospective revenue. They've actually done an average to poor job with managers but they've had real rub of the green and the team has punched above its weight, good fortune they've benefitted from too. We have decent owners who support the club, work hard, and have their hearts in the right place. They're far more good than bad and many clubs have a lot worse, But heroes, Gods, perfect, or deserving of unquestioned praise? Not for me.

Excellent post - and Steve P has said on a number of occasions that he finds constructive criticism/discussion useful, as you would expect. I think this thread has, in the main, been understood as a discussion, which is refreshing by recent standards. Too often people see a post as a defining opinion. For example I get accused of being a sycophant - but the truth is that I only engage with certain types of posts (to stop myself being on HOL as much as I used to be - I have a job and a sort of life, plus I do the radio so don't want to give out Hambo overkill) . The threads/posts I pick tend to be where I think someone has something wrong or is being unfair. So when I, or others, defend the board for example, automatically some people assume that this means a lack of acceptance of criticism. The same is often true when I observe people making salient, but perceptibly "negative" posts. There is tendency for people to dismiss those out of hand way too often rather than to engage/ HOL is at it's best when people are willing to discuss an issue - and accept that the end result is not always going to be an agreement. Trolls can sometimes make that a little tricky (you know who you are) - but most of the time it's just people talking, united by a shared interest/obsession. Some of my favourite posters, past and present, have been those I disagree with more often than not but who debate issues properly. It's what the site is all about IMO. More please.

tbh I think Scott Dann would be a good buy at the moment as he generally plays a similar number of games in a season to the number we have left, but obviously we would have to sign his twin brother too as cover. Haha, like it! The injury problems reinforce the insanity of his demands in my view. Having said that, if we want real quality there will probably be a degree of "damage" to come with them for them to see us as viable at this stage. Trying to avoid players who only see us as a chance to earn big money for a brief period is another aspect to a difficult window.
