How many people have not been re-deployed and how many have not got an ill health pension?

I don't know to be fair. All I've heard is anecdotal from some Fire Brigade friends who say people they've worked with have had their pension payout reduced through enforced early retirement.

Every line of work I've ever had has had reduced pension rights if you retire early, enforced or otherwise.

Even if the goalposts (or pension ages) are moved?

Edited by nickgusset (24 Feb 2015 7.53pm)

Well I got made redundant from a firm that had provided a defined benefit scheme, and now I'm in a defined contribution scheme which of course is much more market sensitive.

Neither scheme provides any accrued benefit for years you've not worked, whether that's through ill health or any other reason. I'd have been miles better off to still be in the defined benefit scheme though.

Why would you expect deferred pay for a time when you did not work for a company?

I wouldn't, I never worked in an industry that provided that kind of benefit, so why would any other worker expect it, if they've retired early per Nick's point?

The FBU's gripe is that because the retirement age for them has been raised, they are being forced into early retirement because they won't be fit enough at the new age and are being penalised for being made to retire early.
One would imagine that there was a reason why the retirement age was lower!

The same applies to all of us though doesn't it? Anyone born after 1978 will hasve to work until they are 68 before they get their state pension for the same reason - we're living longer!

You're wasting your time with logic and common sense. My Dad still works as a gas engineer at 69, he's as fit as a fiddle, could go another 10. And yet the FBU would have you believe these firemen are ready for the knackers yard at 55.

The only lies are coming from the Union if you ask me

Hmm. Well if my house ever catches fire I certainly hope dad's army don't turn up to save it.

Around bonfire time.

They won't reform on their pensions when everyone else has had to.

They are being told to work till 60 and they will still get a very generous pension when they retire which will be £26k a year when you add state pension. Any other worker would bite your hand off for such a pension deal. They want to keep their current cushy arrangement and expect the taxpayer to stump up the £600M funding gap. No, F-ck you, you reform like everyone else has had to.

I support the Nurses as 1% pay rise is a piss take, but the Firefighters pensions row is disgusting and I think the public would be at least divided and mostly unsupportive

Have you added the 2nd jobs or businesses many of them have. Perhaps the Straw and Rifkin rule should apply to them?

I'm just trying to work out why anyone would think the fire service are any different from anyone else in the land. In my co's now closed defined ben scheme you'd have to work 40 years to get 2/3 pension.

Totally different with statutory / quasi-statutory state schemes.

This is a booklet my fireman friend was given when he joined the service 20 years ago. The Government have effectively torn it up! That's why they're striking.

Straw and Rifkind have exposed the hypocrisy of Labour and Tories. while they slash the terms and conditions of workers they line up jobs that pay them £5000 - £8000 a day.

I support all workers in fighting cuts made by and on behalf of the rich parasites who feed of us.

There is nothing wrong with a person charging £5000 - £8000 a day for their services.

I doubt many do tbh.
If 'others' had a union to highlight any issues then I'm sure we'd all be equally sympathetic.
It's a shame that many 'others' don't have this particular outlet because if they did then what appears to be jealousy would soon disappear, hopefully.

News just in..........700,000 of the working population are now said to be on zero hour contracts.

Thoughts?

No mention of it on LBC today either (from what I heard). Media manipulation from those above?
