Thanks for the compliment.I take your general point,though the example to millions bit had nothing whatsoever to do with petitions etc.Fact is in our culture today a C list sleb like Clarkson is looked at as a role model by many,however naff that is,including lots of kids.He craved the media spotlight so he (and his admirers) can't complain at the downside.

If that happened where I work (or within the media companies that I've worked with),I suspect whomever did it would be out,particularly if they were already on a "final warning" and it would definitely be a big deal within the workplace with those in charge feeling they had to act.Don't see any reason for it to be different cause its a popular sleb who has a "blokey" image. If no one you know thinks punching someone in the face at work for no good reason is a big deal,so be it.Just glad I don't work with you or them

Firstly, define 'no good reason'. What's reasonable to you may not be to me and vice versa. This grates with your moral stance but not mine. There's no winner here, only opinion.
Secondly, I'm equally glad our paths will never cross in the workplace as I guess I'd be forever walking on eggshells.

Why jump on the 'every celeb is a role model to kids' bandwagon? They are not and never will be to 99.9% who happen to see a famous personality.

He presumably has more to lose, by that I mean pay for. Wife, kids, younger than the other two, less in the bank, no other current jobs/shows etc.

Hammond has consistently tries to break away from cars and bikes into mainstream presenting but has run up against the issue he is a w@nker. Evidence, by the lack of solidarity.


I'd say tried to supplement rather than break away.

He's just not very good at anything else and he's tried most.

Overheard someone discussing the story suggesting that anyone else would have been sacked outright for hitting a colleague.

Sounds like the sort of trite nonsense you'd hear on here.

Don't know if anyone noticed but the BBC have banned all male panel shows so rightly or wrongly it's very convenient for an organisation who've needed to clean up their image.

I'm not saying it's a sad loss not having anyone intentionally offensive on TV (or the BBC) as I think Frankie Boyle is a cnut but now they're doing away with BBC3 they're even losing those sitcoms with mild sexual reference.

Call me petty minded,but if you choose to turn up hours late at a hotel while on a work trip and then punch the team member responsible for organising hot meals for 3 hours earlier in the face because there is no hot food left/still available ,you are at the very least a complete w..nker in any work situation and worthy of disciplinary action,whether sacking or lesser.So,in such a case,if you think its good reason,we'll agree to disagree.

I think its in many ways very sad and indicative of our naff sleb culture,but I don't think it unreasonable to suggest a popular TV presenter of a family TV programme might be someone quite a few kids (and adults) look up to.But,like your differing view,its just an opinion,one amongst others

I don't see how Pikey can be claimed to be racist. How are Travellers a race? They come from all over the place, it's kind of in their nature.

And it originates from turnpike, so it's only like saying road warriors.

What did I miss?

2. I don't condone them, but I'm well aware that incidents such as this can happen anywhere let alone in the workplace. I'm just glad it wasn't aired tbh.

Sorry to labour the point but I missed your post regarding another role model deliberately striking someone WHILE AT WORK and it WAS AIRED TO MILLIONS.........damn that Jedinak!

I'll remember that in future TUX; my opinion may be less valid in your eyes if I didn't (I think) post at all on a thread in palace talk with a theme with some overlap one or two weeks earlier.I don't even need to have expressed a contrary opinion for you to have a pop.Love and peace;chill out.

Where's the contradiction? Mile fairly promptly had disciplinary action taken against him,by both his employer and his area of work's governing body.He could be said to be a role model with a public profile.Don't remember too many posting there saying that if it was deliberate,it didn't merit disciplinary action,though to be fair you thought he should be punished but hoped he wouldn't be.I thought he should be punished too.

Some thought (I think) he shouldn't be because other similar incidents hadn't been. It is important a given employer or work area body don't treat different people differently.In the BBC's case they introduced a new "bullying behaviour" code following the Saville revelations and will likely have dissatisfaction amongst staff if Clarkson is now treated differently to how a regular BBC person already on a "final warning" would be.

The law does protect them as an ethnic race under the Equalities Act whether that's right or wrong

There are two distinct groups of people: "Gypsys/Roma" and "Travellers", who tend to get mixed up,though in recent years here there has been quite a lot of inter marriage.

"Travellers" here come largely from from Ireland.

"Gypsy" became widely used in Europe,often in a derogatory way, to describe Roma people.Roma,which in the Romani language means "people", originate from northern India. The root of the Romani language is ancient Punjabi, or Hindi. The words Roma and Romani have nothing to do with the country Romania in which the Roma are called Tsigani (Gypsy).

They are very much a distinct ethnic/racial group.They have faced great prejudice in Europe (particularly,Central,Southern and Eastern Europe),for centuries,and were singled out by the Nazis as one of the ethnic/racial groups to be slaughtered in the Holocaust for being "sub beings".They still face widespread discrimination and prejudice in many countries today.

One theory of the origin of "pikey" it that it comes from "turnpike", the place where itinerant travellers and thieves would camp near a settlement.So,a derogatory origin but not a racial/ethnic one.But one which grew to describe Roma and Travellers particularly,and with a very negative connotation.

A legacy of that here is the way the description "pikey" has become a general negative term in describing "naff" people in a negative way as well as a term to describe Roma/Travellers,and likely to be offensive to Roma and Travellers.
