Quote reborn at 13 Apr 2015 9.30am

This whole thread is full of bile and hatred. Par for the course really.

Not like the un-reconstructed old days ,some of the personal beliefs around "preferring" one's own, is quite sad. To prefer one's own, is it to deliberately detriment those that are different due to belief, skin colour, sexual preference, or even just politics?

It seems less and less believe in equality, let alone inter-generational equality.

You forgot class, which among many other criteria form the basis of favouritism. How about someones choice of football team?

The suggestion that bias is towards 'Ones own' is bit of a red herring as well. The 'left' love to embrace this while boycotting that, resulting in similar shared prejudices.

Anyway this all oversimplifies the problem and reduces the perpetrators to a hackenyed Alf Garnet sub-sector of the working class and leaves me wanting to like or dislike as many things as possible for the most ridiculous reasons I can think up.

What rot.
So I suppose cats should like dogs as much as they like other cats.
It is the natural order of things that people like to associate with people of their nown kind. You see it in every race. In fact, human beings can't invent enough ways to differentiate from each other it seems.
What you are suggestinng is that we try and live together in harmony when every piece of evidence suggests that that is counter to human nature.
Dream if you like, but reality bites sooner or later.

There are good people and bad people out there and it has nothing to do with skin colour, religion, or anything else. Some humans are horrible.
I am a hairdresser and talk to almost all different nationalities on offer in Croydon. We all seem to be the same. I love the diversity.
I think all the problems come from people not talking to each other, not connecting with strangers, being suspicious instead of open. I also believe that with social media this will get more problematic over time.
Really sad because most of my clients are great to chat with- great stories and anecdotes. Everyone has a story if you're willing to listen.
I've got food and shelter tonight and a loving family and a few good mates.........and a passion for Palace.
I am incredibly grateful

Whatever life may be like as an immigrant in Blighty spare a thought for the various immigrants here in SA.

Commonality with a diverse range of people discovered and appreciated through actual real life interactions. Great! Sounds like an obvious approach, but many prefer to keep to whatever they deem 'their own kind' to be.

Precisely. Thast is not to say that one can't interact with others but when push comes to shove, we all side with our own unless another stronger natural motivation is in play. We all need to recognise certain realities in order to best deal with them in a civilised society.

Can you explain what politics has to do with it ?

The post was a statement about peoples natural tendencies.
To deny human nature is to deny reality.

For some it is their innate nature to be racist, as he admits.

They side with their own but dare not define what "their own" is.

The use of the word racist is so divisive and political, and deliberately so in this case I'm sure.

I would loosely, and possibly inadequately, describe "ones's own" as an association with others which has a perceived mutual benefit. It could be drawn around racial, national or religious lines or even less obvious groupings. Humans are complex creatures but often don't even understand the evolutionary predisposition that drives them.
What we can't do is ignore it while chanting some liberal mantra about an idealised world.
