This is probably a stupid question but I know nothing about law etc. I work for a dodgy company. Today I touched a 3 pin socket or whatever they are called by accident. It didn't have a cap/lid on it (I think they are suppose to?) I got a electric shock which hurt and really made my arm go num. I managed to get my hand off it quickly. A work colleague said I was lucky to not be thrown across the room and apparently he reckons it was 450v. Have I got a case to sue them? Its a horrible company that treats people like dirt so I do hope so!

Ohm G. I hope you took the opportunity for the ultimate ghost w*nk?

Yes, is it in the accident book?

do you think a firm that operates with no cap on a plug would even know what an 'accident book' is ?

Sticking your fingers in a live plug is never a good thing.

Not sure why you did it but it must have taken a bit of effort. Most sockets are plastic and therefore don't carry a current so you must have gone to some trouble to get your fingers in.

You may get some traction if the employer was using over 400 volts. The usual current is around 240 so that maybe an option.

But in all seriousness you would need to demonstrate you were reasonable and they were negligent to stand a chance.

If we're talking 3 pin, 13 amp, 220-240v plug sockets then plug covers are more dangerous and discouraged. A mugs ploy for uneducated parents.

Absolutely the above. You are much safer having a socket without these supposed 'safety caps'. What they do is open the live and neutral terminals and if a child bends the plastic and leaves the plastic pin in the earth the socket has the others open. Parent PLEASE DON'T USE THEM.

If you have had any sort of electric shock you should get it checked out at A&E, it doesn't have to be at the time in can be dangerous. As already stated I doubt it is 415V but you may have been lucky and only touched one of the lives otherwise as said before you wouldn't be typing this!

I don't have a clue about electrical objects or know what its called but it wasn't a socket as in the square ones you get on a wall. It was on the wall and round pointing downwards. It was blue, I'm not sure if it had pins or holes but it looked a bit like this [Link] I touched underneath by accident and that is when I got the shock...

That's a 240V 16A commando socket. If it had pins (plug) it won't (shouldn't!) be live as that is what is wired in to the appliance. If it is in a fit state to use there is no way you'd get a bang so must be damaged in some way, in which case it is negligence.

ive found out it has pins. Its not what is in the picture on the link i attached. It just looks similar as is the same shape and is blue. It is on the wall to power some sort of machinery I believe. Someone I work with believes it is 450v and should have a cap that covers it but didn't..
