Has largely been played out wide left at Sunderland, which means his recent record is actually not unimpressive.

The last time he got a long spell as a Centre Forward he ended up scoring 5 in 3 including 2 against the champions elect keeping Sunderland up, since then its been bit parts out wide.

You are right. He was played out wide with Fletcher or Defoe in the middle. Right-footed so used to cut in from the left.As well as a physical presence, Wickham has a long throw in his armoury and takes free kicks when a wall is formed. Supports Liverpool !

What? So if we had a free kick just outside the box and the opposition decided they could not bother with 'a wall' Wickham would say 'nah, not for me?'

You know what I meant.

I think that Cabaye, Puncheon or Jedinak might be further up the queue to take free-kicks.

Wikipedia - goals are in brackets - not good stats at all!

2009–2011
Ipswich Town 65 (13)
2011–
Sunderland 74 (11)
2013–2014
→ Sheffield Wednesday (loan) 17 (9)
2014
→ Leeds United (loan) 5 (0

Andrew Johnsons record at Birmingham was 8 goals in 80 games.

This as a signing is very sensible - 6m going up to 9m with add ons for a once very promising 22 year old who has had 3 years of PL football in a car crash of a football club with some of the iffiest managers out there (PDC, Pooyet), generally being played out of position.

Our obvious Plan A was Remy - Remy isn't going to happen this season obviously so what do we do ?

Charlie Austin at 15m is no value for any club, far too risky a signing for a club like ours, and given no-one seems to want to meet the asking price tells its own story.

We have upgraded on Frazier Campbell who in all probability will be gone, either a perm or loan for the season to leave us with a permutation of

Murray / Gayle / Chamakh / Bamford / Wickham / Yala (if AP so wishes)

That isn't too shabby is it ???

Wickham against last seasons signing of Sanogo or Ameobi or Doyle or the geriatric AJ - what's better ??

Or should we only be shopping at Chelsea and PSG these days ???

SSN easing off on this story this morning - not yet confirmed and Keith Millen was non-committal when interviewed at Bromley.

Just because Sunderland have agreed the fee doesn't mean we have even talked terms with him yet I would guess - although sure we have an idea of what he is after.

Well needed. By all accords, Margaret has been there since the Champ days and really hasn't made the step up.

I saw on the Sunderland forum a comment to the effect of 'that would explain why I saw him getting on a train to London on Monday'. Of course there are many reasons to come to London (principally because it isn't Sunderland) but talks might have been going on behind the scenes for a couple of days.

This is how rumours start sometimes. He could well have fancied a trip to the London Madame Tussauds to have his photo taken with convincing replicas of John Terry and Boris Johnson.
