£16m Saving for cutting Teletext, How does it cost more than a few grand a year in salary for someone to tap out updates. The sooner the BBC is self funded by advertising or product placement/endorecement rather than us being forced to by a licence the better. BBC is run the The Kids Company Charity was, they all dip in when needed. Well there is the software, the infrastructure, the integration and the fact that it was a bespoke service that required support, not to support costs of the infrastructure, software etc. Plus all that in a live service, is very tricky to maintain, especially given its age. Lord save us from BBC becoming self funded and going down the path of Channel Bore, 5 and ITYawn. The licence fee is great value for money compared to say Sky.

I would say bin light entertainment as it's not really their thing, but then I remember Blackadder and the Young Ones. I don't know the numbers, but I assume they actually make money of of voting shows like Strictly (never watched it, but I understand the terminally stupid get to vote for a fee? Apologies if wrong). Love the documentaries and news output. I've also just discovered the Last Kingdom on iplayer, which is entertaining me on the train at the moment. So, for me, anything I don't use!
When Top Gear is relaunched they'll have even less money, as that will no longer be the cash cow that it was.

I don't agree about self funding itself though, see the thread on the licence fee in General Talk from last week.

COuld not disagree more. It's somewhere to escape the incessant barrage of advertising and needs to stay that way. Or is that exactly why the knives are out for it? I would not mind paying for a licence if the BBC provided a service i thought was worth it. I rarely watch anything on the BBC. The money they squander or that is filtered through the old chums brigade is disgusting. Hundreds of thousands spent on Cabs, Free lunches and huge sums paid to make shows that are s***e. Fair point well made.

I get rid of Radio 1 and potentially Radio 2. These are areas which commercial radio stations can do easily. I would not be getting rid of BBC 3 , the BBC does need to cater for all ages. Review news services, streamline OB teams, use the rolling news channel for regular bulletins etc. I would ask for less US news and more global. Adverts on domestic BBC website. Lobby for licenses to use I-player etc or demand a fee. Review Local Radio Pensioners to pay the license fee. I would also force Murdoch to divest either Sky or the newspapers. There was a good article in the Radio Times a few months ago.

Get rid of period dramas, anything with Benedict Cumbert*** in it, anything that promotes deviant lifestyles, the Welsh and Scottish channels that are broadcast in some dead languages that no one watches, Miranda, James Corden, Radio b****** One, BBC Three and Eastenders. That will save billions.

Personally I would be sorry to see the Beeb become a commercial broadcaster but they need to up their game. Cooking Programmes and how to make pottery should not be on a mainstream channel. Get rid of the crap untalented non celebrity t***s. Did someone mention James Corden Keith Lemon is another one (make your own list ) et f*cking al. My wife used to watch strictly but that is overloaded with over the top "gays" and dumbed down crap. Bring back Hancocks half hour---i know that takes a leap of faith but perhaps Bradley Walsh could do the job

Well said Jamie, I have worked for the Beeb for 8 years, and have the utmost respect for the organisation , I previously worked for ITV for 28 years, I know who I prefer.

It's sad that they need to keep people like Nick Grimshaw to compete now they've made it on to other networks, because they're utter cnuts. Should be some sort of sell-on clause so they don't permeate wider TV or money to fund the Beeb if they do.
