I remember as a nipper thinking that beer - only seen in the house at Christmas - consisted of Light Ale or Brown Ale. In cans.

No YT, bottles not cans. Tins were for peaches and condensed milk. Dad's beer was in bottles from Unwins off licence in the local parade of shops and he allowed me to return them so I could keep the refundable Penny.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

At Christmas we were lucky if we got some Cream Soda in a bottle from the Lemonade van. I think you got tuppence back. 12 pence a bottle.

...and if you were really, really lucky you got a good slice off an ice cream brick in your glass of cream soda and half ate the cold, fizzy resultant mess with a spoon and drunk the other half.

Yes, the real ice cream float had to be Cream Soda.

Talking of Soda, I recall as a kid being esctatic when we got a Soda Stream. I've no idea why it retrospect, it's just fizzy drink, nothing earth shattering . We didn't exactly have much cash to spare though growing up, so I guess it's the simple pleasures!

Obviously you are a lot older than me POG but I beg to differ, whilst I agree with bottles in general, I do remember cans too, but with no ring pull, you had to make 2 holes with a metal opener & the cans were proper thick, heavy duty(unlike now)
maybe im running into early 70s though ??not 60s?
The bottles were proper heavy also, pale ale, bitter, stout & porter, never saw lager then (60s)

Kids, tired of being bothered by your pesky parents?
Then leave home, get a job & pay your own bills, while you still know everything.

Plus mild in the Midlands which I have never tasted as I lived in Worcester Park during my formative years

Mild was usually used as a mixer - Mild & Bitter or Brown & Mild. In London Light & Bitter was popular because if you had a friendly barman you got more than a pint for your money.

The mild in the Dog and Bull back in the 70's was all the slop trays filtered back into the mild barrel at the end of the night

In a good way, this thread reminds me of a festive version of the Monty Python "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch.
