"Folk singer Roger Whittaker, famous for his 1969 hit song Durham Town and expert whistling, has died at the age of 87.

His other hits included The Last Farewell and New World in the Morning, and he sold nearly 50 million records around the world, his website said.

After starting in folk clubs, he went on to success with the Skye Boat Song, a duet with Des O'Connor in 1986." (BBC)

He seemed an amiable cove although as a boy he must have left old Durham Town quite often if he spent his time on the banks of the Tyne.

There seems to be a cull going on of 70s BBC Saturday night show hosts: Parkinson, Yarwood, Whittaker...

The Last Farewell is very evocative.

I didn't like all his stuff but his contribution to music provided a nice occasional escape from mainstream pop music.

You do wonder. It seems suspicious to me that apart from Pike, all of the cast of Dad's Army have passed away one by one. Surely some questions should be asked.

There used to be place up west that did a dinner dance after a
star of the day had done a short set . I dont think you knew who the guest singer would be until they walked out .

All the big stars of the day were at it at some time or another and I remember asking the old man how his night out had gone the next morning . (he had a broad yorkshire accent )

Reet bloody waste of me time that

RIP RW
