The job yesterday was to get the win. Burnley were desperate to get their first home win and climb out of the relegation zone. They were always going to give it their best shot against a Palace team without its creative players. Palace made sure they got the win so job done. They did it by scoring two excellent goals as well. Ayew’s persistence to win the ball & cross for Schlupp to knock in was commendable. And Eze’s calm pass into the path of Mitchell (though I don’t think it was meant for him) for the second goal was sublime. It reminded of Pele’s pass for Jairzinho in the 1970 World Cup final…

The job yesterday was to get the win. Burnley were desperate to get their first home win and climb out of the relegation zone. They were always going to give it their best shot against a Palace team without its creative players.

Palace made sure they got the win so job done. They did it by scoring two excellent goals as well. Ayew’s persistence to win the ball & cross for Schlupp to knock in was commendable. And Eze’s calm pass into the path of Mitchell (though I don’t think it was meant for him) for the second goal was sublime. It reminded of Pele’s pass for Jairzinho in the 1970 World Cup final…

Also at Brentford re Ward. Maybe Ferguson was the hope to come in, but that boat has now sailed. We definitely need a new RB in January. In the meantime Schluppie can play there. Richards? Yesterday was very clear that this is the wrong level for Ward. The pace beats him all the time now.

Burnley were knocking at the door but Roy must have judged them to be of little effect. Lerma and Hughes could hold the middle. He was right.

As both are out of circulation and officially retired (I acknowledge so was Roy) it’s probably a moot question. However I would be happy with a manager that has a successful record of managing in the Premier or a top European league, can command the respect of the players and can get them well organised, disciplined and capable of consistently winning games. If that isn’t in a free-flowing style of football I can happily live with that.

Should such a manager get the team into the Champions League but some find the style of play boring, then really I don’t mind. Much better than plummeting down to the Championship or worse while attempting to play like peak Brazil as a number of teams have previously done and arguably as Palace did under Big Mal who laudably tried to play the game ‘the right way’. That was a painful personal experience. The continual expectation and crushing disappointment week after week was far worse than grinding out a dull 2-0 away win like yesterday.
