How about all the hundreds of people every day who die and are brought back to life? Where are their heaven and hell stories?

I had a heart attack a few years back in which I died and was brought back in the ambulance with the defibrillator. I can tell you that, in the intervening time, there was nothing whatsoever. No white lights, no tunnels, no angels singing, no Pearly Gates. Ever had a general anaesthetic? That's what it was like.

So one nutjob telling the world he went to hell and was sent back does not proof - or even reliable evidence - make.

There is no 'proof' for someone who doesn't believe, just as there is nothing to disprove for someone of faith Moose.

I'll use me as an example, after all I am the only one I can speak for, and I am often called to speak of my experiences, most recently in front of thousands of people.

I believe 100% that I know Jesus having encountered him, firstly in a vision and then a spiritual epiphany that continues to this day.

I know that makes me sound like a crackpot to anyone who doesn't believe LOL, but there you are. I know what I know, I just lack the ability to convey it accurately to others.

It's that simple.

I don't think that's entirely true, some people seem to switch from one camp to the other, or get stuck somewhere in between. I don't disbelieve per se, I just think on the balance of probabilities that its very unlikely and even if it were true, the capacity of any individual or group to truly claim to represent the will of such an entity would be absurdly improbable.

As such, its a personal thing, how you experience the world, existence and life, not others, and that no one really could ever tell you what 'the rules are'.

I've had experiences that have left me somewhat 'open' to the idea of something more to existence than just the physical (I experienced a vision of Mictlantecuhtli whilst in a grave yard in Sheffield, for example - It didn't result in me worshiping an Aztec Death god who is lord of the Underworld though).

I wouldn't say I'm agnostic either, just anti-theism and pro-mystic.

Reborn - why do your views (and those of other religious believers) deserve or demand respect? Do your political views deserve equally unquestioned respect? If I said that I devoutly and sincerely believed that trees and ponds contained nature gods would you patiently acknowledge my spritual journey or would you dismiss it as baloney?

I think all beliefs when discussed in a mature and intelligent manner deserve respect, even if you think they're baloney - Because they enable you to 'test your own view of reality and see it within a contextual frame work.

I 'kind of believe' that all things have an 'essence' of spirit, whether they are alive or dead - All existence stems from the same few subatomic particles - all that is different is their alignment, and accordingly it seems from a quantum perspective to all be connected.

Something that was dead, may at some point in the future be part of something that is alive, as all existence is in a entropic state progressing throughout dimension of space time (and beyond).

Well firstly how and why you respect others beliefs depends on your own value system. Secondly because my own beliefs are consistent with those shared by billions through history.

I would wager that the scenario you outline above would put you in a very small camp.

Reborn,
no insult intended, but I prefered you when you where on the sauce, spouting s***e ,spitting blood n thunder, tales of s***ting yer pants, brown wings & punch ups.

It sounds like I missed this golden time! Though in all seriousness, there aren't many religious people on here and reborn puts across his views of the world in a respectful fashion. The responses he receives from others sometimes come off as belittling. It's important to be respectful of well intentioned, nice people even if we disagree with many of their beliefs. There's not enough of that on here.

I didn't mean to say that everyone had that attitude by the way! We all of course put our views up for debate as soon as we put them out there .

The atheists who use condescending phrases to disparage christian beliefs are quite rude and would probably help themselves by being a little more respectful of others' viewpoint. Don't agree but by using terms like 'spagghetti monster,' 'sky fairy' and other cliched phrases its causing antagonism and reflects badly on your own position and argument.

So would most things, fortunately ideas are a historical progression of discourse resolution. Religion itself included. The idea of Christianity, for instance, required a number of much later historical developments - Most notably Emperor Constatine, the death of Julian, the rise of Catholicism and Pope Innocent the I (establishment of a cannoncial biblical account) and of course the first council of Nicea

Then you have Thomas Aquinas and Augustine, plus of course you have to have the protestant declaration, Martin Luther and Calvin, before you can even really start to think about a foundation of modern Christianity.

Very early Christian faiths were very different, almost completely alien to the modern worshiper - Massive changes in theology and philosophy, occurred before the idea of a 'Christianity' was even considered - and even then that only really applies to Western Christianity.

A Muslim scholar once said to me, that its not as important to believe, but to try to understand, that everything you learn brings you closer to God's creation. But that you will never truly understand it, only be enriched by it.

A Buddha said that there are two paths to enlightenment, you can achieve it through daily practice, study, understanding and meditation, or you can go through the worst hells and come out the other side. Neither is more valid.

Ironically, that has its origins in Robert Anton Wilson, who whilst not a Christian, was certainly a believer in the mystical and preternatural - and a life long agnostic - Originally it was used to debunk not belief, but the idea of the certainty of rationalism as professed by James Randi etc.

But usually used by, mainly, atheists on the hol, alongside terms such as sky fairies, in a condescending tone to be disrespectful to those who have a christian, or other, faith.
