As an expat (with no plans to return at present) be sure that if I decide to come back and live in UK I WILL and no border agency will stop me!!
For sure I have more right to be there than any Africans or any one else

I find it interesting how these issues become moral ones.
Morality and reality are often very different and although morality can effect reality it should not be in denial of it.
The reality is that the migrant problem is not finite it is virtually infinite in fact. As quickly as we allow migrants here there will be another group right behind them. That is a practical problem and one where morality has to be tempered with common sense.
Regardless of circumstances, we cannot continue to allow an endless stream of migration into this country. Any one who disputes that is insane.
The question is, at what point do we say enough is enough with net migration numbers ? Do we wait until we are at crisis point or do we act sooner rather that later and head of a disaster. There will be no point in crying over spilt milk.

I fully and totally agree and your point on reaching a crisis point is oh so true. There is nothing like closing the stable door when the horse has bolted!

If all expats decided to come home at once, how would you feel about allowing them in if we are already overcrowded?

A typically diversionary question.

To stay true to the thrust of my statement, it would be sensible to ignore sentimental attitudes toward ex pats. Having said that, they are and will always have been British citizens. So who would you prioritise ?

Legally it depends if they're still citizens doesn't it, but it's fair to assume they left for a reason as have the migrants.

You seem to favour those with families here. That would likely apply to most expats.

The question was purely a hypothetical one about numbers and people's attitudes to a 'swarm' of expats in our bursting full green and pleasant, rather than reasons / family ties.

They're not going to be ripping the fences down are they. Thay can all re-integrate immediately, likely have accommodation in the UK and won't be entitled to benefits.

Even those ex pats claiming benefits abroad?

That's quite similar to foreign nationals here claiming for children outside of the UK, except this actually happens.

There are limits for how long you can be away, which are significantly shorter than the length of time it'd take to be considered even a de facto expat.

Or do you mean a pension which someone has already paid in to?

I don't know to be honest. Ashley Cole can come back if he wants to play for Palace.

So what's to say that people coming here might go back after 3 years?

I take it then that you're happy for our European brothers and sisters to come here and do the same?

My sister spent a couple of years living in Spain , really did her a lot of good.
