I would subjectively suggest that a lot more than £3m is being spent each season on VAR, only it is hidden and the amounts are unknown. However it is those possible payments that are killing football.
Nobody with the benefit of action replays and all the angles could possibly question the Everton right to a penalty. It was totally clear cut if you watch them. So two extra points to Man City. What’s that worth? A lot more than £3m.

In tennis there is a computer system that conclusively and immediately shows the world if a ball is in or out. No explanatory lines or angles taking ages to reach a decision by some guy behind the scenes. A comparative system could easily be produced for soccer which would eliminate all this nonsense. For some reason, football seems to want to keep all the pressure on human beings to make the call. Either the ref, and/or the person watching the playbacks on VAR. Absoute nonsense. Move it into the 21st century. Bot it and the problem is solved. All a hangover from the Herr Blatter era that we need to progress from and improve the image of football. That was the idea of VAR. Now go all the way with technology.

It works better in cricket and rugby too - one of the problems with football is that goals are rarer than wickets or tries so VAR decisions are more likely to affect the result and so cause controversy. Also as pointed out the potential financial implication for clubs is far higher in football. It seems daft for VAR to spend 3 minutes forensically analysing a minuscule offside possibility then ignore the wrestling which happens at corners.
