Thanks for posting that, haven't seen it for a while but remember watching it at the time. I got to know him extremely well, as much as a kid of my age could then, and he always had time to chat with us and share a story or to reminisce, as he did when he returned from WHU. I recall going to see him play for England against Mexico but Walter Winterbottom left him out and replaced him with Derek Kevan, Johnny wasn't happy, and England went on to win 8-0. When his playing days were coming to an end he went down to South Africa coaching Durban City, Johnny Haynes and Bobby Moore were both down there and he had obvious connections. At the time that was the venue for many ex players to go for their coaching badges. I recall that when he left Palace for WHU that many inside the game saying he should have taken the Milan offer rather go to the Hammers and, looking back, I believe that was right! He's the finest Player I've seen in the Claret & Blue and his death at 60 years of age, was way too young. Johnny was a true Legend!! Edited by eagle in cornwall (04 Apr 2013 8.42am)

Even though it was almost 50 years ago and the video a grainy black and white, his movements were immediately recognizable. Took me back to my dad taking me to Selhurst and standing on the terraces in the late 50s and early 60s with one special treat of getting to go into the stand on one particularly cold, wet night. My dad was a West Ham boy whose family moved to Beckenham before the war. So Johnny going to West Ham was quite ok. I went with him to watch Johnny play for West Ham -- it's a bit hazy now but I think it was the home leg of the 1985 Cup Winners Cup semi-final. I just recall the atmosphere was electric with the crowd so close to the pitch -- can't believe they will replicate that at Olympic stadium! Fittingly, my dad's last game was the 2004 playoff final between West Ham and Palace. My youngest brother brought his son from the US, they had been Palace season ticket holders before moving to the U.S, and took my dad to Cardiff. They were interviewed by the BBC as three generations of supporters. They were seated with the Palace supporters with my dad wearing his West Ham colours! With his split loyalties, I think the result was only a mild disappointment. Good memories!

My budgie was called Clancy, he was green and lived to a ripe old age even though he wasn't treated all that well really. We should have given him more attention, bless him. He loved looking at himself in the mirror and said a few words and whistled. I hope you all liked my memories of my budgie.
