The follow up to my 'random photos from the 80's' thread.
Division 1 A: QPR 0-2 Back in the big time! Our first game on our return to the top flight unfortunately ends in defeat. The balloons - that were about to become our hallmark - get an airing, as a 5,000 strong Palace following welcome our boys to Division 1.

QPR attack in the first half as the ball goes narrowly wide. Fourth Palace player from the right with the number 4 shirt is Andy Gray, making his return to Palace after a more than acrimonious departure to Villa for a couple of years. He was the most hated man at Selhurst at that time - made Bostock's departure seem quite pleasant!. When Coppell shocked everyone and re-signed him 3 weeks prior to the start of the season, the response was mixed from the fans. Gray himself admitted he was a little worried at the reception he would get but as it turned out we forgive and forgave. We had to! It was quite clear very quickly that he was the only player in the team at that early stage that had that assurance in the top flight having already played a season there. Certainly me and my mates were quite shocked at how much he'd come on as a midfielder since leaving.

Another interesting point from the game was that ex Palace hero Kenny Sansom, in the twilight of his career, lined up for QPR. He actually made a crucial goalline clearance from Wrighty when it was 1-0. Kenny was quoted in the paper the next day saying: 'Being an ex-Palace player I took plenty of stick about that from their fans behind the goal'. Here he is taking the ball away from Eddie McGoldrick as Wright watches on.

3/1/90 FA Cup 3rd Rd H Portsmouth 2-1 This picture shows the first minute in what ended up being a most unbelievable journey all the way to Wembley. One goal down at half time, it seemed that 2nd division Pompey would end the journey there and then. However goals from Thomas and a more than dubious late penalty won and scored by Gray started us on our way. The game was notable for the controversy happening off the pitch. Geoff Thomas had spent the last 6 matches on the bench after returning from injury with Coppell reluctant to bring him straight back in despite the clamour from supporters. Sir Steve actually received loads of flack and bags of mail from fans (ahh the pre internet days ). Thomas to his credit kept his head down and when finally given the chance in the 2nd half of this game took his opportunity like a dream scoring a cracking equaliser. If people think impatient support is a thing of today then think again. While a goal down the players ran the gaunlet of abuse from us supporters as the players struggled to beat Pompey. Ian Wright said after the game: 'The abuse got to such a pitch that the boss said at half-time we would have to put the crowd out of our minds. We weren't playing well and we knew it, but we could've done without the fans on our backs.' Jesus! If we were unhappy in the midst of our most succesful period ever, Dougie's got no chance!!

18/11/89 Div 1 Palace 2 Spurs 3 An action picture with Palace threatening. Pardew and Wright in the picture. Also Mabbutt, keeper Thorsvedt, Gary Stevens and is that Paul Stewart just behind Pards? The significance of this game? It was big Nigel Martyn's debut for us after his £1m move from Bristol Rovers. It was a very frustrating game from memory and never deserved to lose it, Spurs winning it with goals from Samways, Howells and Lineker. Brighty got both of ours. That defeat had us sitting just a point off the relegation places. The game will probably be remembered by most there for the free-for-all brawl in the middle of the pitch with Paul Gascoigne right in the centre of it all. Remember Mark Dennis getting involved too Andy Gray had fouled Gazza but the ref waved play on. By this time Gazza's head had gone and he jumped in two footed on Eddie McGoldrick and all hell broke loose leading to the paper headline the next day: 'Punch-up at the Palace!'. I bet the Queen nearly spat out her cornflakes that Sunday morning.

27/11/89 ZDS 2nd Round Palace 4 Luton 1 A crowd of 3,747 saw us dispatch Luton on an absolutely freezing and foggy night at Selhurst as you can see from Nigel's attire. If you look very, very closely at the Luton player on the ball, i think you'll find it's none other than Ian Dowie. Strangely enough, this game is one of the more memorable games i've been to because of a certain referee called Kelvin Morton. Yes! the same ref the previous season against Brighton that awarded 4 penalties to us and one to them. We were a goal down in this game through an Ian Dowie header, but then Morten waved his magic wand and in a space of 3 crazy minutes sent 2 of their players off and their assistant manager for verbals! (Danny Wilson, David Preece and Terry Mancini). This basically paved the way for us to steam roller them 4-1 with goals from Bright 2, Wright & Pardew. I do remember the Palace humour on the terraces at its best that night after the sending off's. We all took great delight chanting everytime Luton players gave away a soft foul: 'OFF! OFF! OFF!' Was Kelvin Morten's undoubted love for Palace ever proved? We could've done with more refs like him last season. The day after this game Coppell made yet another crucial signing that played a large part in the succes that would follow: Andy Thorn £550,000 from Newcastle.

27/1/90 FA Cup 4th Rd Palace 4 Huddersfield 0 Goals from Hopkins, Salako, Bright and an OG see us through to round 5. This was our first game after Wright had broken his leg - the first time - against Liverpool. Pemberton and Alex Dyer wait as the ref has a word with the bench.

17/2/90 5th Rd Palace 1 Rochdale 0 This wasn't the walk over many expected against a 4th division outfit, and we had to wait until the hour mark to break through with a Phil Barber drive in front of the Holmesdale. We nearly conceded an equaliser too right at the death, but Martyn stuck out a leg and deflected a close range effort away. The crowd of 17,044 - 5,000 up on the Huddersfield game - showed that the fans were starting to feel that Wembley was not that far away. Here is one of the reasons the game was so tense: Rochdale keeper Keith Welch who had a blinder on the day. The young fans, ballboy and steward at the Whitehorse end share the frustration of another near miss.

20/3/90 Division 1 Palace 1 Derby 1 One of those days where you left the game not that bothered about the result...... Ian Wright, in his 5th game back after a broken leg, breaks it for a second time. With the Liverpool FA Cup semi final less than 3 weeks away, what seemed like our only real chance of an upset disappears on a stretcher towards the tunnel (far right). Sandwiched inbetween the ref and Derby's No.2 is Wrighty's replacement, Dave Madden, making his first home appearance since the Blackburn play off promotion match.

Derby restart the game after Andy Gray puts Palace one ahead in the 73rd min. Unfortunately 7 mins later Mark Wright equalises for Derby. Here England's No.1, Peter Shilton, looks on. This was just 3 months before Italia '90 where England had their biggest success on foreign ground. Both Shilts and Mark Wright played a big part in it. Bobby Robson later confessed that our Ian Wright's injury that night probably prevented him making that squad despite his cup final heroics.

24/3/90 Div 1 Palace 1 Aston Villa 0 With Ian Wright probably out for the rest of the season, and Palace hovering just 3 points above the relegation zone, playing the league leaders was probably not the best timing. But Coppell again pulled out a great signing from left field: 30 year old Garry Thompson, languishing in 2nd division Watford's reserves, for £150,000. Thompson's braun and enthusiasm was just the tonic we needed and he had a dream debut as we played to his strengths, namely lobbing the ball up to his head at every opportunity! It worked, and Villa couldn't handle him, and it was of course Thompson who scored the winning goal. After the game, a fuming - and very bitter! - Villa boss Graham Taylor, moaned about our excessive use of the offside trap 'bringing the game into disrepute.' Taylor fumed: 'I can go on the training pitch and teach a lot of things, but i can't go out and teach people how to play offside. I'm not interested.' This is the man that brought long ball football to the top of our game and made a right hash of being England manager, mmmmm........ Garry Thompson waits for another set piece to be thrown in, with Barber nearby.
