With all the talk of players we'll be needing and who we'll actually end up signing, I'm still at a loss as to what was going through Dowie's head when he signed this guy back in 2004. This was someone who wasn't even doing the business at Colchester, for goodness' sake.

In view of his obvious unsuitability, apparent to even the most stupid and blinkered, was an adequate explanation for signing him ever forthcoming, from Dowie or anyone else? He must rank as one of the worst signings in the club's history so did I miss something?

I need to know.

Probably Dowie trying to be a genius. Quite a few signings were a disappointment.

Dowie had Wayne Andrews with him at Oldham.

I might be wrong but I think Wayne Andrews was signed in a part exchange deal involving Gareth Williams.

I missed what I think was his only goal against Coventry in an evening kick off, was freezing so and grabbed a Bovril so was late getting to my seat

I think if Dowie had not signed anybody that season we would have stayed up.
The Team that went up were never really given a chance.
By the end of the season the team that failed at Charlton was similar to the promoted team.

I hope this time we play the lads that took us up.

Were they, though? In that Premiership season, we signed:

Speroni
Kiraly
Sorondo
Boyce
Ventola
Hall
Lakis
Kolkka
Kaviedes
Torghelle
Danze
Boyce

Of these, only Danze, Torghelle, Lakis and Kaviedes didn't really fit in but that was probably more down to adjustment issues than a lack of basic talent. The actual grounds for signing them were fundamentally sound. The others were all class acts.

Signing Andrews just didn't make sense; more like an irresponsible squandering of the club's money. Weird.

THE TEAM THAT PLAYED CHARLTON

Crystal Palace: Kiraly, Butterfield (Freedman 56), Hall, Popovic, Granville, Leigertwood, Soares (Powell 86), Watson (Riihilahti 89), Hughes, Routledge, Johnson.
Subs Not Used: Speroni, Ventola.

Kiraly,Hall

Were the only players out of your 12 that played.
And all we really needed was a goaly.

And the prick brought on Darren Powell as centre forward in the 86th min when we needed a goal and left Ventola on the bench!

Never forgiven him for that!

You cant have a go at dowie for his signings. There is no way the team that took us up would have kept us there, several loan signings for a start.

Boyce was pretty much player of the season, kiraly a good keeper, speroni eventually too. Kolkka a fan fave, hall and sorondo decent enough defenders.

Kaviedies ventola and lakis could have been masterstrokes but didnt quite work for reasons not to do with ability. Probably more so tactically in lakis and kavs places

And for me that proves dowies mistake when we wrre in the prem a lack of willing to play the new signings and find a tactical formation that accomodated them.
