I still have one with all my Palace memorabillia. Painted claret & blue - I put fur round the handle to make it more comfortable. Always took it to the games & always wore a rosette, scarf & bobble hat.

My son has one. Took it to the Palace (was 8 at the time), some numb nut steward tried to confiscate it. Everyone around gave him (the steward) so much grief he had to go back to his milk crate, rattleless. Bring back the rattle! Quote Eaglesnut at 07 Sep 2010 11.44pm

The rattle was originally used by air raid warden's in the second world war. I guess someone then, post-war, had the idea of taking them to a football match to make a noise and a trend was started. I think they must have died out by the end of the 60s/early 70s. I was the proud owner of two in my time, and yes, a whack round the head with one being twirled in earnest was painful.
