Scott Dann is certainly skillful, great header of the ball and a thoroughly modern footballer. BUT Jim Cannon was legendary. A great leader, fearless and would go on those mazy runs (ok he'd usually fall over at the end) but it got the crowd on their feet! He also played with a number of partners (as you would if you played over 600 games) - the best for me was Billy Gilbert - the king of the sliding tackle but him and the giant Mickey Droy were also pretty formidable. It was a sad day (and a brave move from Coppell) when he was eventually released. No one mentioning Jeff 'tub of vaseline on the eyebrows' Hopkins? I think he's currently doing the Own Goal training.
You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name. |

As some have said already it's Thorne/Young for me but I have a rose-tinted view of those days as I was a youngen. As much for their ability on the pitch as the fact they were with us for such a long time! Remember how fat Thorne had got at the Geoff Thomas exhibition match!

Yes, Alan S was a tough centre half but who remembers Len Choules? Once scored an own goal from close to the half way line. Oh those Div 3 South days

Billy Gilbert or Alan Stephenson
When you're dead you don't know you're dead. It is difficult only for the others. It's the same when you're stupid. |

Ian Evans undoubtedly, goal scorer as well. Closely followed by Cannon & Gilbert.
lo Selhurst silva felix, lo Selhurst cara nutrix, viget, vigeat, vigebit! Best team:- Jackson; Gilbert, Evans, Cannon, Sansom; Hughes, Kember, McNichol; Byrne, Holton, Wright. |
