...of the football special.

Some of my best Palace moments are directly connected to travelling on a ricketty old piece of rolling stock even the Nazi's would have thought about twice using on the New Cross to Auschwitz line...cheap train travel, Gildo's sandwiches, cans as far as the eye can see...breakdowns every hundred miles or so and pulling into Kings Cross at precisely the same time as the Millwall special on an alarmingly regular basis...smashing times

Hoof Hearted 17 Aug 10 10.44am

I can remember going on Chelsea with my brother in the late 60's early 70's.

We got on the tube at Fulham Broadway to South Wimbledon on the way home.

One hooligan was swinging on the suspended handles in order to get his steel toe capped boots to smash every ceiling light in the carriage.

No one batted an eyelid!

Too scared or ambivalent to it.

We had the ginger copper who used to travel with us all the time. I took a fair few swipes off him, especially when he caught me trying to loosen light bulbs.
The last special i went on was the semi final in 1990. I used them all the time when the coaches were full up. Remember those days, when we took 25 coaches to away games regularly?

When i see him, it's gonna be painful. Skinny little cont.

I remember 'ginge' very well.
Ask elbarno about him.
Specials were the very best way to get to away games.
Miss them badly.

I know you are but what am I?

I was on that train, pissed, sliding up the aisle on my knees shouting OI OI!

Ah football specials.
The funny thing was the police making us draw the curtains. Yeh like that was going to stop a brick coming through the windows.
No restriction on beer ffs. I honestly saw a group of palace fans pay a porter to trolley their beer down the platform at paddington once.
HAPPY DAYS.
KIcked off with a load of spuds at paddington on the way back with big greg (R.I.P) chasing them with a fire extinguisher.

Heh heh - yeah that always got me - I remember coming back from Manchester on night with hardly any windows after the train took a broadside..it was b****** freezing.

I remember Ginge the copper, he played a kind of John Aalderton 'Please Sir' role, yes he had the authority but it was like herding cats trying to keep any control and he seemed to spend most of his time having a catch up with the local plod on arrival - he was a good fella as it goes
