I cannot believe how run down Margate is these days. I remember visiting my cousins & Gran down there on many occasions from the 60's through to the late 70's, and again in the early eighties with my future wife

Dreamland / Bembom brothers was in full swing, little fishing boats in the harbour with friendly skippers you could talk to and you wouldn't of been able to move on the beach.

It actually bought a lump to my throat yesterday when walking through the town pre match looking for somewhere fairly decent to eat. We found a Wimpy that just about looked okay to what else was around but my stomach is feeling the effects of that this morning, another bit of past nostalgia ruined

Shops all boarded up, pubs closed down, chavs and pikeys outside every cheap bar and flocking Primark with the 'spoons looking like a drug den

I so hate to see once a lovely little seaside town end up like this, it has really enhanced how much good stuff I had as a kid that I don't have now

Does anyone else have good memories of Margate and have they seen what is like now in comparison?

used to go to margate/ramsgate/broadstairs with family when i was youngster and always remembered good times, must admit only really visit broadstairs still as margate/ramsgate have sadly seemed to have gone down the pan a bit although in general a lot of seaside towns seem to have gone the same way, which in all honesty i feel is a shame as i,m sure with a general tidy up could pull in the punters again

Was always going to Margate I loved the theme park in all its guises.
Looping star was amazing for its time, however I loved the old school coaster just as much.

The big wheel was one of the biggest in the world at the time.

My Mum spent her childhood living there and remembers the original fair ground with this double big wheel
Amazing wish I could have gone on it

Biggest in Europe,I believe there was a bigger one in the States It took me years of courage to actually go up on it.

I used to love the hall of mirrors maze under the big dipper

I remember going on a school trip to Margate. We ran into Bembons to be first to get on the Mary Rose.

Haven't been since I was a kid - Whitstable is very nice though

there's nothing there though, fine if you want an oyster or you want to skim a few pebbles on the beach, but other than that it's pretty bleak.

I agree. A terrible shame. My family used to holiday on the East Kent coast in the late 50s and early 60s. A trip to Margate was always eagerly anticipated. Okay, it never had the gentility of some seaside resorts, but it was a thriving and lively summer destination, with a beautiful sandy beach.

How you turn it around I don't know. Once the tattooed, beer swilling, angry dog brigade start to dominate everyone else runs a mile.
