The Police and Prison officers of the US aren't particularly well paid (although careers vary by state etc). The average police patrol officer salary in the US is 48-52k at the median point (so half make more, half make less), its about average US salary - The range is between 31k US dollars and 81k US dollars per annum). The 48k range tops out around the 0-5 year experience section (so assuming that they start at the low end of 31k to 48k after five years). I expect that in many areas, this means a 'take what you can get' intake, rather than a reasonable educational requirement. The figures are probably skewed somewhat as LA pay for police is 56% above the national average, where as St Louis (which has had some very serious recent problems) is 7% below the average.

The police have a duty of care to everyone. It's up to the courts to figure out who's law abiding and who isn't. The police have a duty to the entire population and that duty will not be best served by demonising police officers even if on occasion they fully deserve it. Purely in practical terms BLM and the Black communities as a whole would save a lot more lives if they worked harder at stopping black people killing each other and less time drumming up racial friction. BLM clearly don't represent the attitudes of all black Americans. To comment further would be repeating myself.

Law abiding and people breaking the law. In fact the latter is probably more important, as the vast majority of police interaction will be with people suspected of breaking the law. And that is a very important factor, 'suspected of breaking the law'. It isn't for the police to decide who is and is not due a duty of care. It seems that in many of these cases, the police response is to shoot if there is any resistance, or non-compliance, without trying to control the situation with non-lethal means. Its interesting how rarely the UK firearms officers actually end up shooting even armed suspects, maybe one or two cases, in the UK per year - with most firearms situations being resolved without a shot being fired - by either party.

The best approach to avoid demonising officers is to deal with them appropriately, and openly and fairly. As opposed to the system which seems more geared towards ensuring that police officers are protected and that victims of violence are demonised and their lives trivialised. The US police has a terrible history with the black population dating back decades - especially in the South. BLM isn't about gun crime, or gangs, other groups in the US are focused on gang initiatives, school programs etc it is specifically about police violence, so its pointless to say it should focus on Black on Black crime, because that is not its focus. The same kind of thing is happening to other white people as well, such as Dylan Noble (his family are currently sueing San Fransisco Police).
