Recycling obviously minimises the need for landfill and if people care about their country they should recycle as much of their packaging as possible. That's good enough for me. It's not hard. Seeing a plastic bottle in a bin for paper or a general bin when there's a bin for plastic nearby is so ignorant.

I am a veteran recycler of my own waste and every day I collect rubbish from the streets and recycle that as I walk my dog.

You have no need to remind me of the benefits of recycling.... or advise me that there are lazy/stupid cnuts every where we look.

However... I was making the point that our recycling does not even come close to saving the planet when the Chinese and Indians still burn coal at such a phenomenal rate.... regardless of whether or not they say they are committed to renewable energy - "making massive investments".

And as TUX points out the Chinese are also using massive amounts of cement building their new infrastructures!

The real concerns for humanity is kind of masked by the argument over climate change, and that is the huge consumption of fossil fuel and pollution, which we know does a) have a limited capacity b) does cause real world problems, coupled with a massively increasing human world population and increasing demand on fossil fuels.

Add to that the impact on food resources on the planet of a massively growing population, and argument about whether or not the gradual change in climates and rising sea levels, is far less of an immediate issue.

I can't find the graph on the internet, but an ice-age happens approximately every 10,000 years. This data has been collected from deep ice core samples from which you can derive approximate age (from depth) and carbon dioxide content (and therefore global temperature estimate).

So temperature has always been fluctuating over thousands of years.

The thing that concerns scientist, is that since the start of the Industrial Revolution (late 1700's), the temperature has soared over a period of only 200 years.
This massive acceleration of temperature over such a short time period is theorised to be due to anthropogenic activity. (people burning stuff)

As a planet, we are now at the hottest that we can determine we have ever been. We are at a Tipping Point.

That's the same China that picks up 10s of millions of government tax payer subsidies to run wind farms in countries like the U.K. And Australia etc It's a nice little earner for them. And still 75 percent of their energy comes from non renewables
