He looks quicker than our current centre-backs which would be a big positive as it would allow us to play a higher line, plus he is described as a ball-playing defender which if we are to progress towards a more possession-based approach will also be important. When you think Sakho was costing us around £6 million a year just in wages then Euro12 million seems a good deal for a young, full international.

I'm not going to pretend I know much about him, but if he is as good as he sounds on paper then this would represent another solid signing and we're still less than two weeks into July!

If this is serious and Palace, are serious about injecting youth into all parts of the side , it’s a big yes for me . At his age showing the all round ability he already does. Then if available at the kind of money this suggests, it’s a get in there for me.

I hear that terms may have been agreed for this lad to come. Not sure whether that means fee agreed or player's terms agreed as well as fee.

Time will tell.

I hope so. I think this guy would be a great buy for Palace. Actually most of the young centre backs we have been linked with have been very promising so far.

If we could keep Cahill then I’d say Nelsson, Cahill, Tomkins and Kouyate would be adequate cover and in a major emergency we have Kelly.

Will we also need left back cover? If so defence would be sorted.

Opinions seem divided on this one. I'm in the camp that says no. As I see it, Mitchell was becoming 1st choice as last season progressed (until his injury); Hannam was being prepared as cover and in Schlupp (a LB at Leicester and in his early days with us) and Riedewald (who has covered the position previously), we should have enough without having to spend precious resources on another LB.

Only trouble with this is that those 3 back ups are all what I’d call emergency back ups. Just because we have 3 of them doesn’t mean we have adequate cover. For me I’d prefer the club to sign someone on a free at the very least that can do a proper job. If Mitchell got injured long term we’d have a problem.

Hope so, just the right sort of guy we need

Fair point

Two thoughts. We don't need to do all our business in one window and there's something to be said for staging the redevelopment of the squad. By the winter we should be clearer about Ferguson who is - from memory - two footed and cable of playing across the backline. Back up may be thin but is there and seems fairly low priority - could include Ward after all too.

Also if we're serious about promoting from within at some stage we need to take the plunge and allow the U23 to have a clear path to the first team. Only seen bits of him but isn't Hannan the closest to being ready?

Agreed. I don’t think left back is a priority so much. But it needs looking at. Based on the players that have left I would say centre back is the main priority followed by Olise who has perhaps replaced Townsend and I think we’ve needed fitter centre mids for a long long time so I’d like to see a decent centre mid.

Last season we covered the least amount of ground in the league. That’s not because we didn’t have fit players…it was the style of football. We played 80% of our games in our own half. Let’s hope that changes…and if it does we could do with a quality box to box midfielder.

Also, let’s not forget the fact that Mitchell’s been far from convincing. He’s certainly far from the finished product. Not sure there’s a premier league left back there.

Personally I think he needs another season of development, playing, say, 10-15 games. Instead of being thrown in the deep end and relied upon for 38 odd games.

I’m not sure what Kelly’s done wrong to only be considered an emergency back up. Never let us down there and by all accounts is a very solid Centre half.

It may be a big shout given he hasn't made his debut, but I actually think Hannam might oust Mitchell. The lad exudes confidence, is aggressive in the tackle and gets forward with pace. I hope we get to see the two of them fighting for the shirt next season. Personally I'd say if our budget is limited then there are more important areas of the pitch to focus on than the full-back positions.

His ability on the ball is below the standards in the championship. He had one decent game vs Arsenal but has managed to lose us games single handedly. Perhaps one of the only players that makes me cringe when he’s selected.

Ask yourself this…why does he not get a game? Why have we seen unfit players selected ahead of him? Why did a midfielder start ahead of him? He’s never been fancied by the management. He’s not even close to being good enough at this level especially with all the high press tactics around today.
