From the details on the Sky Sports app, he came after half time and was withdrawn after 77mins.

Make of that what you will, but only lasting 20mins in a pre season friendly doesnt look good.

How's your maths? He was as said in comms only ever scheduled to play 30 mins.

On the plus side he is fit, training with the first team, and enjoying a full pre-season. He played well at right back for West Brom, so he won’t have forgotten how to do that. Hope we see the best of him yet to come.

i think he's a right back.

30 mins is a positive, if cautious step no doubt informed by the medical team. Best scenario is for him to regularly be playing 90 mins for the u23s by the world cup break. Integration into the matchday squad could then be more likely and healthy.

What is it about us and right backs? It's a miracle that Joel Ward has had that spot for so long (with an AWB break)!!!

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

When we went for and eventually got Ferguson we all saw him as a good signing to replace Ward.

Sadly his injury record has been appalling.

Even if he is fit he has now had years without regular football which will mean his ability will have declined and he has missed out on crucial period of time he could have been developing in.

I'd love to be wrong but reality is we got a dud and we need to move on for his sake as much as ours. Best option for him will be for him to get fit and loaned out to a lower league team in order to get regular first team football and try to recover some of what he has lost whilst we bite the bullet and try to bring in a RB

Probably right. However, with us not being heavily linked to signing defenders, it seems we're happy for Ferguson to essentially be the CB/RB cover that Kouyate & Kelly were last season.

That suggests a certain degree of faith in his ability. However, for the first time, there's a genuine issue if he gets injured. If any of Clyne/Ward/Guehi/Anderson/Tomkins are injured, Ferguson is front and centre. Lots of players have spoken in the past about being more injury prone when they're only playing bit part roles and not getting regular minutes. Seems he'll have to play a lot of U23 minutes this season even if he is in and around the first team, just to get his body used to playing.

The slightest hint of any injury in pre-season and I think it'll force us into the transfer market.

I stand corrected thought that was accumulation with achilles when trying to get all muscles back

If you come on as a sub and you're withdrawn after 32 minutes, there are only two possible conclusions and neither of them is a good look for Ferguson. Either,

1. You simply performed so poorly that, even in a pre-season game, you were pulled off or,

2. The medical team has dictated that you play half an hour and not a minute more (although in that case, you'd think it would make more sense to bring him on after 60 minutes and let him finish the game). If that's the case then his recovery is clearly much more early stage than many of us hoped or thought and he's probably at least three or four months away from anything close to match fitness.

We have a free hit with Ferguson this year; it's the last year of his contract; we're clearly not going to offer him a sizeable new one, and for now, we might as well keep him around in the vague hope that the worst is behind him and we get some sort of return on our investment. I suspect if he's not made any kind of mark by the January window, he may well be quietly moved on.

you missed 3rd option which is when coming back you test it for 20 to 30mins then talk to the medical team what he felt if not bad then next level is moved to , I know these things as ive had ligaments in both ankles go and ruptured calf muscle , didnt have medical team 24/7 but twice a week i was with a physio , so they have a plan and he could be back in under 12 weeks , but breaksdown again think that will be the end

Agreed. I don't see it as a negative, merely a cautious approach based on his previous injury record.

If it was stated he would play 30 minutes and did that (well 32 minutes actually) then i can't see an issue. He has not had a pre-season for a few years now so the club will be careful with his progress and will closely monitor things.

Eze was eased back in the same way - maybe the medical team are more cautious after the Wickham experience.

I didn't miss it. That was very clearly my option 2.

Was there a Wickham experience? Sounds like a rubbish theme park.
