Sam Johnstone Release Clause

The release clause will definitely be due to Johnstone's side - probably his agent suggesting or insisting on it. Johnstone clearly ran down his contract to get a big pay rise, but also wants 1st team football. With 2 decent goalies already at Palace this was never guaranteed. So agree to the move but ensure there is a get out,if required. The amount seems fair for both sides. Don't forget WBA played hardball the previous summer when they received a few bids for Johnstone, and i suspect he was keen on a move then back to the Prem.

A release clause is never advantageous to a club. The only reason to have one is to be a more attractive move for a player. Therefore the pressure for release clauses, whether they are proposed as an idea by the club or the player's side, ultimately emanates from the player's side. A billion pound release clause is still less advantageous to the selling club than a theoretically infinite price that it could insist upon if it chose to.

In my opinion, Johnstone played a large part in our improvement. I don't like to complain about Guaita - great servant, but feel Johnstone did better. He seemed to improve the whole team. I know he made the one big mistake but De Gea made a few and he's still a good keeper. I'd pick Johnstone over Guaita personally.

I hadn't thought about Martyn but the main thing I prefer about Johnstone is that he seems more composed, and seems to command his area, better than Guaita. We've never really been too bad with goalies - even our worst were largely acceptable, and would have a decent point if they blamed it on who was in front of them.

Agree on Johnstone. Not for me to say and quite easily an awful, subjective view on things but I think even beyond his goalkeeping abilities he looks to have inspired confidence at the back and in the team. I love Vinnie, I really do, but he is a stay at home, non-vocal, shot-stopping goalkeeper who lacks a commanding presence, particularly in aerial scenarios. The defence looks more settled for me with Johnstone behind them.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

VG may well be a better 'shot-stopper' than Johnstone, that's debatable however very possible, but I'd argue immediately SJ looked more confident (presence), comfortable in the air and better with his feet than Guaita has over the long course of time he's been between our sticks. Quality of opponent, manager of course and even players in front of them may well factor into considerations, and I did insist it was only my personal opinion, however for me Johnstone looks more suited to our current identity if not just an improvement. Does not detract from my adoration, gratitude and respect for VG nonetheless.

Generally, (as I think with Johnstone) they are one of 3+ keepers on the books with no option of playing elsewhere, unlike an outfield player who can be called on to cover another position. This means they could (and I think Palace have had keepers that did) spend their whole time with a club pushing to even get a reserve team game, let alone a 1st team team one, so it would make more sense for them to be able to 'get out' if an offer came to get actual match time else where. Plus the fact, as he was on a free and had, in the not too distant past, been in the England squad, I suspect he would have upper hand in negotiations
