I can see where you’re coming from, but we don’t have the attacking full backs to offset the defensive nature of the set up with two holding midfield players.
If we had pacy attacking full backs it could work a treat providing the necessary width and dynamism .
Eze and Edouard are too isolated in the current set up and would benefit from a central midfield player breaking forward to help.

Last night’s game has gone now, and we probably haven’t got the available players to do it, but I would like to see a team play 442 against Arsenal .
They play centre backs or midfield players at full back , sometimes use one central defender and leave gaps confident that their possession of the ball will prevent problems.
There may be a danger they would play through you, but I would be interested to see a team attack them down the flanks, make the defenders turn and generally make life uncomfortable against them.

I disagree. The fact is the full backs don't have what it takes to get up and support the attack when the opportunity arises. Whether this is through instruction from the manager I don't know.

I was convinced Sam got the ball for the penalty from my view in the Whitehorse, but having got home and seen it again, I need to apologise to the ref for calling him a bent b******
So frustrating though, like the city game last season, to match the top teams and lose only by a penalty is gutting.
Good performance though, shame we couldn’t cause them more problems in front of goal, but we’ve got to remember who we were playing and we defended well against them

Saka earned the penalty by going down, fair play, but there was a blatant blocking of Guehi, to stop him, but they never see that .

This was the point of discussion on BeIN after the game and the point Roy raised in his post-match interview. Different yes/no views (blocking in an off-side position, Guehi heading in the direction of the ball, blatant).

I think both sides have reasons to be unhappy with the decisions last night, so I think we just have to chalk this one off and move on. On another day the block on Guehi would have been given as a foul, while if you watch the Eze incident Partey clearly turns his leg in an attempt to trip him and his leg catches him. VAR checked it for 2 seconds, so I'm sure they had enough time to make the right decision! The first booking for Tomayiasho (however you spell his name) was him bearing the brunt of a collective Arsenal effort to waste time. 23 seconds to take a throw is stupid. The second booking was harsh but every pundit I saw initially said they thought it was a booking and it was only the replays that showed it to be harsh. VAR doesn't check these things, the same way it doesn't point out Partey should have been booked for gesturing for a yellow.

Ultimately we were as good as could have been expected in the first half but in the second half we only really started to threaten following the sending off. We have a really solid spine and I actually though Eduoard looked more committed than I can remember. We really need Olise back asap though. If Franca is as good as his YouTube clips he will also add another dimension.

Ayew my motm for the second week running. He is really thriving since Wilf is no longer there to moan at him.

We were solid enough but a horrible lack of quality in attack from starting eleven and the bench.

Hard to see where the goals are coming from.

Edouard looks a lot better now than he did last season, but still lacks pace, urgency and positioning.

Roy bemoaned the fact that Mateta wasn't on the bench, but I thought JRS looked a much better bet from the little we saw of him. I'd really like to see him start a game in place of Edouard.

A lot of hype around Franca although none of us have a clue about his ability other than what we've seen on YouTube. I'm waiting to be impressed.

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

Townsend as a co-commentator summed this up quite nicely by remarking that "JA used all his experience in this situation".

Good points. I think last night's game will be a good indication of our season.
We are solid at the back but the odd moment of lost concentration or insistence on passing out from the back will cost us goals e.g. the pen or the chance when they hit the post in the first half.

Whilst Lerma and Doucoure make us a lot more solid, going forward they offer us very little.

Stop Palace by stopping Eze.

The slow build up play makes it easier for teams to defend against us.

In terms of the full backs, yes they are not the most attack minded but learning to cross 1st time would be a big improvement. The moment both take a touch you know the opportunity to cross is dead.

We do lack pace on the wings but whilst Ayew is performing admirably, Schlupp looks lost. We desperately need a left sided player in the next 9 days.

Very fair assessment. Hopefully with Olise and Franca in the team we'll have a little more bite and creativity.

My only real disappointment is how we played in that 20mins we were camped outside their box. It was clear after about 2 mins that Eze was being man marked, and we weren't going to be able to unpick the by trying to play through them.

We should have been drilling balls across the 6 yard box over and over again and make them defend.

In reality we didnt give them too much defending to do.

Everytime I see Ahamada, I don't think he's anywhere near good enough. He runs around a lot but has poor touch, poor positional sense and can't pass. I hope he proves me wrong but I see no evidence that he will. He's like the midfield version of Mateta but smaller.

He has really quick feet and can dribble, hence why Roy used him out wide several times in pre-season. He'll need pitch time to get used to the PL, so it may be Roy uses him wide until he adjusts. He was one of the best players in pre-season though, so I'm not sure I agree with your assessment, but we'll see. One thing we do agree on is he runs around a lot...and at a great pace!

We lost the game to bit of clever gamesmanship. Disappointing as we had handled Arsenal really well by sending their real danger men on both flanks, and their main prompter Odergarde, into constant dead ends, not many achieve that. As ever though our own forward play was always snuffed out far to easily so a draw was always our best hope. Having said that when they went down to ten men a goal might have come we certainly put the pressure on, but let’s face it , even at this point in the game our attempt to ramp it up was two forward playing kids that have rarely if ever played at this level, Arsenal see the change ,and respond with three top internationals in response to our change of emphasis.
It kind sums the league up really .pesonally I’m just glad we made them sweat ,and at the end of the day it was only a refusal of VAR to punish an obvious block that actually gave Arsenal the points.

Only having one recognised centre forward within the starting 11 and bench is criminal. When they went down to 10 and looked at the bench you didn't think we could really make their life hard from there. Fresh legs up front who could possibly pose a few problems. Sadly they could probably of gone down to 8 and still we wouldn't break them down at the front. As we don't seem to have anybody in the centre forward role internally it is one in, one out up there, meaning we are relying on off loading Mateta to bring somebody new in. In a way because he wasn't around his departure looks imminent. Hopefully we can get somebody in, Adams, Iheanacho, whoever who can fill that gap, which was even more evident last night after the sending off. However we need to be very careful on the length of contracts we give, as we can't have players "stealing" a wage in the future.

—United States Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld
