Why are we struggling to sign players then? Players and agents arent stupid they know we are a club with no ambition and stuck with a old geezer in charge on a short term deal. Players want clubs who have ambition and long term plans. We dont. If we do please tell me what our long term plan is?

Parish is useless and I told you lot earlier in the summer most players wouldnt touch us with a barge pole and I have been proved right.

Which players we wanted turned us down? Olise couldn't wait to leave , sorry is now very happy to stay after a meeting with Parish, who is supposedly useless.

Over half the PL teams sacked their managers last year (some more than one) so your argument is clearly nonsense, especially as RH is likely to be one of the survivors this year.

Players must have turned us down. Roy said a couple of weeks ago we need a few players so where are they? Our club has no long term plan or ambition. Parish and the board are at fault by appointing a manager they decided to get rid of 2 years ago!!

So you’ve got nothing then.
Lerma traded up to come and play for Hodgson, one of Brazil’s most promising young forwards came here and we’re on the verge of signing the best young English keeper in the league. But, yeah, nobody wants to play for us.

Yeah but the way a clubs wage bill is budgeted incorporates the transfer fee and wages over the length of a contract, so zaha off the books is 20 mill for franca plus his wages over 5 years and milos wages cover lerma, we must have more than 0 in our transfer budget this year.

Edited by rikz (28 Aug 2023 5.25pm)

I don't follow you rikz.

Zaha got paid 5.2m a year. Each of those 5.2s came from the budget for that particular year, so him leaving didn't put any money in our account, it just saved us five million this year. That money can go towards transfer fees and wages.

If Franca gets about £50k a week that's 2.5m this year. Plus Lermas wages, plus Olise new contract and bang, all the saved Zaha wage money is long gone.

Then you have to find the 20m for Franca transfer fee.

Based on our average spend every year for the last five to eight years (during which time our income has remained fairly stable, and given that the club accounts show that we spend all that we can), the Franca fee is the lions share of the yearly budget for transfer fees, presuming we spend only what we have and don't risk too much of next year's money now.

Perhaps, as you say, we have staggered the Franca transfer fee over the life of his contract, but then perhaps we did the same thing when buying Eze, Anderson, guehi, Doucoure etc, in which case we have no more money available just because we haven't had to pay for Franca in one go.

By the way, I've not got any greater understanding of the club's accounts than the next man, but you don't need much insight to get the drift. The club accounts show that Palace spend every penny they can v on players, wages and transfer fees included. Sometimes they spend two or three years worth of money in one year, sometimes they spend very little because they spent so much before, but the average spent on transfer fees, after sales, is around £20m to £25m a season.

That's what we've got.

Really, do you live in some parallel universe.

Great starting 11 ha ha!! Man City have a great starting 11. We have a bang average starting 11 thats why we will be bottom half of the table. That Brazilian lad we brought in is injured and unproven. Good English keeper but we need outfield players!

You lot on here are happy to avoid relegation every season and have no ambition. You lot also dont like questioning Parish and are his fan boys.

We need to somehow replace Wilf's goals but last season only 10 players scored more than 12 league goals. Considering our resources and general appeal we're unlikely to attract any of them and most other clubs are searching the world for these goalscorers which may explain buying the best goalkeeper we can - keep as many clean sheets as possible, go for 1-0 wins and keep the goal difference to a minimum. It might not be an exciting approach but it is pragmatic.
Even if we did unearth an unknown who bangs in 20+ how long could we keep him?

I understand where you lot are coming from and respect your opinions. I just want to see our club have a long term plan and show some ambition. We shouldnt be content to just avoid relegation this season. We should be looking to finish top 10 like Brentford etc. Giving Roy the job again after getting rid 2 years ago shows a lack of long term plan and ambition.

Anyway lets see what happens still a few days left of the transfer window.

Excellent post.

It's not about getting the missing bits of the jigsaw to turn is into a top six side, it's about doing everything possible to get enough talent on the pitch to win enough games to have another go next year.

At any one time we will probably have no more than four, maybe five players at most who are good enough for the top six. Often it has been a lot less.

How we play is dictated by what bits of a top six side we have at the time and, critically, we will lose those as quickly or quicker than we gain them.

I feel like it’s a bit pointless trying to argue you round here but please don’t take that in any insulting way, I just mean that literally.

What I would suggest however is that there is a difference between saying ‘I’d love to see x, y and z’ which of course is absolutely acceptable as a fan and slating everyone at the club for being idiots, w@nkers or the enemy, which is/should be not acceptable.

Anyone with knowledge of football and Palace could come up with a good few suggestions on most desirable circumstances but just because we don’t see this happen doesn’t mean it’s because of anything any of our frustrations tell us it is, sometimes it’s just the reality of the business financially and otherwise.

Working yourself up, arguing with/insulting other fans and becoming massively resentful towards the club will be most damaging to yourself I’d suggest. Being angry does show you care of course but don’t let it come out the wrong way and balls up your own head. I only offer as a suggestion from my own numerous experiences.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!
