“Keir Starmer has made clear he would not have a resignation honours list. A Labour government will clean up politics, including banning second jobs for MPs and rooting out cronyism.”

It will be a first if it happens that's for sure.

House of Lords champagne bill £90,000 last year.

It's outrageous, but not untypical, that Truss should be able to appoint these people as lawmakers.

You can’t ban 2nd jobs. It’s only if the job conflicts with time or is proven to benefit politically. This starmer is a QC so should know this.

I beg to differ.

I could only take a 2nd job working for the bank with their approval and it could not impact my working hours and a host of other things e.g. running a p*** site in my spare time.

In the past I know plenty of people who could only get part time work so had 2 part times jobs that dove tailed. However they were banned from doing this on the grounds that the first employer might need them to work extra hours and they would not be available. Disgusting I grant you but it appears to be legal.

I agree with Starmer, MPs should focus on the job they are paid for not lining their pockets with part time directorships or consultants ti the Trade Unions.

Early desperation from Sunak, him and Cleverly look more like Laurel and Hardy every minute.

You may be able to fool all the people all of the time, clearly in our case with Brexit, but not BBC Verify.

The government, and Home Office, taken down.

You obviously haven't noticed that he says whatever you want to hear.

I hear he's going to appoint one of his mates to lead the taskforce.

Yes and no.

The "yes" you have covered and I agree with. But...

One issue with much of the current crop of MPs is the career politician. They know a whopping nothing about the world outside their tiny bubble but seek to rule those who reside there. You may not like them, but Heseltine and Howard (to name but 2) had successful careers and then brought their skills and worldliness into their job.

I don't disagree that some Mps have a successful career outside of politics but that is not the point.

Parliament sits on average about 170 days a year. That includes Fridays when they bunk off at lunchtime so to the rest of us that is a half day.

Meanwhile our overworked underpaid politicians complain about their lot. I appreciate that they also have constituency work but somehow they seem to find time to have extra jobs.

Nice work if you can get it.

The Parliamentary calendar is a joke it goes back to when most MPs were landowners and farmers so certain times of the year needed to be on their land. Reform of the working hours to make it more family friendly is long overdue.

A new offence of defrauding the public purse max 10 years - Starmer.

Sounds like the tories ought to be ordering a fleet of small boats going the other way......

The difficulties we may be experiencing currently will seem mild in comparison to the nightmare situation(s) we will be in under Labour.

Sadly we are going to experience it due to apathy and a change is as good as a rest mentality.
