It's January 1st which means I am hungover but also that our players with expiring contracts could technically sign pre-contract agreements with clubs abroad. Here is our list of players with expiring contracts along with their reported current weekly wages (according to spotrac.com)...

Will Hughes (£35,000). £46k a week
Jeffrey Schlupp (£50,000) £60k a week
Jairo Riedewald (£55,000) £45k a week
Nathaniel Clyne (£80,000) £29k a week
Joel Ward (£35,000). £40k a week
Nathan Ferguson (£25,000) £4.9k a week
James Tomkins (£50,000) £25k a week
Remi Matthews (£5,385). £4.7k a week

So, who would you keep and get rid of?

For me Will Hughes, Jeffrey Schlupp (on reduced terms) and Joel Ward should stay. All as squad players. We should then bring in a new first choice right back. Surely we can't continue paying Clyne 80k, Riedewald, 55k and Tomkins 50k at this point. Ferguson is patently never going to recover so, brutal as it might be, he needs to go too.

I dont get why people think Clyne is on £80k a week, a litle research shows it to be nowhere near that.

Nathaniel Clyne earns £29,000 per week, £1,508,000 per year playing for Crystal Palace as a D/WB RL. Nathaniel Clyne's net worth is £26,312,000. Nathaniel Clyne is 32 years old and was born in England. His current contract expires June 30, 2024.

At £29k a week, he is good value.

I literally just copied and pasted the original post, calm your pants.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

because we dont get the right players, Jaydon Bogle and Ben Johnson are young RBs better than what we have and as a squad player they are on 20k and 33k respectively, we should have one of them tied up already, on a free

£80k per week was the amount we ‘allegedly’ signed him on when completing the free transfer in October 2020, following his release earlier that year by Liverpool.

Rumour had it that this was because it matched his weekly wage at the bin dippers but I have no idea if that is true or not. He has since signed contract extensions for us on at least two occasions. It makes sense for his current weekly wage to be nearer the £29k figure than the £80k one.

You're agreeing with me. Our recent windows don't demonstrate success in snapping up the most popular players that are available on frees at the rate needed to enable us to let all of this group be released. Therefore, we end up a) spending the transfer budget on lots of average players, b) having a smaller squad, c) renewing this group, d) having a far better window than we have for a long time.

(Note that neither of these players are currently available on frees - they're under contract at English clubs so we can't talk to them)

Keep Hughes. We can release the rest IMO. I don't think we should be renewing contravts of squad/fringe players over the age of 30 and Matthews and Riedewald are replaceable.

Leaving aside whether either player is an improvement on what we have (and accepting that they are at least younger), how do any of us know that Palace haven't tried to get them, or what wages those players (and others of potential interest) want?

If either player is good enough for us then they will also be of interest to half the teams in the league, and seek to create an auction. Johnson in particular seems to be in a bit of a contract standoff with West Ham, suggesting he may want far more than the salary you've quoted.

All of this is part of the point I was trying to make yesterday - Palace should be keeping Hughes, Schlupp, Ward and Cylne (and possibly even Reidewald) unless upgrades are secured.

An upgrade on our out-of-contract squad players means a player who is better than what we have, within our transfer budget (which, as you point out, means a free transfer or very low transfer fee seeing as we wouldn't be paying a fee to keep the existing players), within our wage structure, and also prepared to choose us ahead of up to ten other clubs of comparable status and means, all of whom are likely to have some interest in anyone who ticks the previous three boxes.

Our chances of keeping a squad player we already have are far, far higher than our chances of signing free-transfer players who are as good, if only because we are in more fierce competition with other clubs for the latter.

It's great when we get a Lerma, but rare, just as it is for any club our size. The idea we can get three or four just isn't realistic.

I think as others have already posted it is our failure to land new targets that mean we end up renewing contracts.

Get them in first then ship some out.

Yes, I am not sure what people mean when they say that an older player is 'blocking the pathway' or 'taking a spot that a youth team player could have'.

Youth team graduates (including youngsters we've bought from other clubs) don't need to be named in the 25 man squad, so they are not being blocked in that sense. We often don't use all 25 squad places anyway.

I'd be amazed if we were ever in a position where we couldn't afford to offer a youth team player a pro contract because we had spent so much on the senior players, so Ward, Clyne and Schlupp aren't blocking a youth team players chances in that respect, either.

The only way in which losing half a dozen senior pros would help a youth team player is that competition would be removed from their paths. At times of widespread injuries and suspensions, your youth team lads simply have to play.

Is that really what we want?! It wouldn't make the youth team player any better than he was, and certainly not make him good enough if he wasn't already.

If Ozoh, Boetang (or whoever) are going to be good enough to improve our side, then they should already be setting their sights on replacing Schlupp or Hughes. The presence of decent, but not spectacular, senior pros is the first filter in the sift to find youth team players who are going to make it at Palace.

Ward, Clyne, Ayew... they are the 'low hanging fruit' of the squad, in that a new player (be it a youth team graduate or a new signing) has, as his first mission, to get ahead of them in the pecking order. If the new man can do that, then he can set his sights on surpassing the next level of player. Most can't complete that first mission, but that's all the more reason to have good journeyman pro's in the squad - they are a good yardstick for youth graduates.

It's not necessary about improving the side, i.e the first XI, it's whether they can take a squad position.

What is the point paying Jairo over £50k a week to play a couple of times a season and a few sub appearances. Ozoh can clearly fill that void. Same with say Tomkins. He never plays and his injury record is shocking. Maybe Kofi Balmer could do likewise.

Hughes for me is a dilemma. He is 28 and should be at his peak. However, he is so slow games are passing him by. Currently with Doucoure injured he should be a shoe in alongside Lerma. Yet Roy is picking a CB Richards in his position, despite his limited passing ability. So what is the point of renewing someone who doesn't even play when there are injuries in his position?

In terms of replacements. Well a few of the youngsters can take squad places, not necessarily starter positions, and there are bargains out there.
Look at Barkley at Luton. On half of what Hughes is on and playing week in week out.
Similarly, if we say bought a LW then Ayew could become a squad player next season rather than a starter every week

For so long as I have been no this site a thread starts as to who we get rid of and some say the lot/most. This club needs all 7 you want to ditch, regardless of their ability. We cannot afford to secure any more new players than, say, 3. So you advocate depleting an already threadbare squad by 4.

Difficult choices...
