If we have one, you might want to look at defending a corner when attacking players are blocking off the goalkeeper and key defenders. If we get the hang of that, you could also try blocking off attacking players running in.

I am no expert of course, so I will leave it with you as no more than a suggestion.

I referred to this subject in another thread earlier.

It's basic stuff. It should be part of the players preparation.

It's not difficult to coach - even I have managed it.

And yet it's not been good for some time now, Saturday only served to highlight it again.

Two ways of defending corners. Zonal or man to man. Zonal makes it harder to block off because as an attacker you’re not sure who is going to pick up who when the ball comes across. It looked like we were playing zonal with a bit of man to man but it was such a mess I couldn’t in truth tell you what it was without recording it and analysing it.

I think it’s been mentioned numerous times on different threads that as good as Guehi and Andersen are on the deck, they are generally pretty average in the air and this is not the first time we’ve been torn apart at set pieces.

Many of us have mentioned this on various threads and it is so, so important. We have not scored from a single corner this season and that is 90+ to date I believe.

Our corners yesterday were largely poor and at best hit and hope into the mixer. Arsenal were well drilled and inventive. There was perhaps a case for foul play for each of them but we should have defended them better.

It has to be a coaching (or lack of) issue and it is so basic! I sense that we spend hours practicing getting into our defensive shape and maybe that is at the expense of practicing offensive and defensive set pieces and corners.

I suspect the issue is that we do practice defending them in training. I don't think we practice attacking from them though given how many we score from.

I'm thinking we zonal mark which hasn't worked for about twenty years now. Reminds me of Benitez at Liverpool maybe ten years ago. He wouldn't change either.

Sticking a man on the keeper is Sunday league level. More fool Hendo for getting pinned. And for he defender for letting him do it.

It really is 101 stuff. Block the keeper so you can stick it into the danger area

And what happens if teams like Arsenal have better set piece coaches than us as well as much better players at attacking set piece balls?!

I think it was said that Arsenal spent a lot of time in Dubai working on set pieces and there were probably a few surprises for us yesterday.

We're not tall enough or good enough in the air as a collective, don't have enough good headers of ball (one of the reasons Richards has been persevered with in Midfield IMO) and is another glaring omission in balance of the team / squad.

It’s strange isn’t it? For a manager that is so defensive minded and who has his defence well drilled and considering our two central defenders are so highly rated, we really are crap at the basics of defending.

After watching the analysis on MoTD of our defending corners it's clear Roys coaching methods are so out of touch with modern football. Blocking defenders and standing on the keeper are normal today but not in Roys world. We looked like amateurs not elite Premier League footballers

Does anyone know how many corners we have conceded from this season?

Assuming it's at least 5 or 6, that's a big deficit on corners alone - 5 or 6 to none could easily be a 10-point swing in the league table.

It's just another pathetic inditement of how we're being coached.
