I'd be surprised if Ferguson can remember what position he used to play.

In the context of this transfer window (i.e. very few players of any note moving anywhere) I think we've done well with what we've got and what we've hung onto: 8/10.

Apart from Phillips I don't really remember seeing any deal go through thinking it's a shame we missed that one. And now I'm actually more excited about seeing the new lad develop over time than have had Phillips here for a couple of months with no real affiliation to the club.

Let's tell him Centre Forward. He cannot possibly be worse than what we have, all we have to do is point him in the right direction.

It's a stuck record, but the success is once again achieved in youth loan outs and senior players retained i.e. all of them.

Wharton looks like a steal but time will tell. He's still a child.

Nunoz, we will need to see whether he is good to start, needs time to settle, or was just a knee-jerk to a desperate and long outstanding need.

For me he is more likely to need time given he is foreign, in a new country, and has the demands of a different and very challenging league. However, he also has to have games. How to square that circle..? Lerma may assist.

Without repeating many others.

We've been after an attacking full back for years now. Coach speaks very highly of him, too good for the league etc. So excited about the balance this will give us.

Wharton looks to be a real talent, and at 19 he's got a lot of time to get better. Midfield has been our no1 issue since Doucoure injury, so we must feel like this guy is good enough to slot straight in.

Would have liked some wide support, but we do have bodies in this area.

Hoping that with a more solid core, capable of turning over and holding position it will be easier for some of the players on the bench to perform when needed

How do you rate it out of 10?

In
Daniel Munoz - 6.8m [Genk]
Adam Wharton - 22m [Blackburn]

Out
Malcolm Ebiowei - Loan [RWD Molenbeek]

Given the constraints of PSR and the apparent silly fees being asked by clubs for 6 month loans, I think we've done quite well to get in the two players we have on a permanent.

Obviously we need to see how good they actually are (or become in the case of Wharton) but we've addressed some of our positional needs so for me it's

7/10

Just a hunch, but we don't seem to loan anyone since Gallagher. Fingers burnt? Hearts broken? I guess in practical terms we massively increased his value but also missed him greatly when gone. I'm guessing, that's why Parish is averse to this.
Although why we couldn't have got someone like Brereton-Diaz with an option to buy, or Broja is beyond me. As with an option to buy we're not burned if they don't work out and we can buy them if they do.

Given some of the loan fees being quoted (whether true or not, who knows) and the wages of established PL players, a 6 month loan could turn out to be very expensive for someone who won't be around next season. I suspect the PSR issues exasperated the situation and so lots of clubs who weren't in a position to buy may have had to pay over the odds to get loans in.

Let's not forget we bought Munoz for less that it would have cost to loan Phillips!

Although during the Gallagher time & thread continuing long afterwards, there were many many many posts from disgruntled members complaining how loans mainly helped increase the value of other clubs players & as they were blocking team spaces that could be utilised by our own upcoming players should be frowned upon / only be seen as an absolute last resort.

can't complain - two most important areas filled, wud have loved Cornet to compete with Mitchell and be back up as a winger, big upgrade on Schlupp imho, no striker but we're OK there for now.

Yeah I agree there. All depends on Eze/Olise being fit.

I'm guessing an ideal starting line up will look something like:

Johnstone

Munoz
Andersen
Guehi
Mitchell

Wharton
Lerma
Eze

Olise
Mateta
Ayew

That wouldn't be too shabby albeit not perfect. Doucoure to come back and some forward options, if everyone stays, would be ideal next season.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

Reminds me of a story Joe Cole told the gathered hackers at a golf day
One of the West Ham players was concussed just before Half time and in the dressing room Harry Rednapp was desperate not to use his sub yet . (I cant remember the names ) After asking for the tenth time if his centre half could go out for the second half the coach said "I dunno boss he is still dizzy ,I don't think he even knows who he is let alone where he is "
"Thats great " said Harry " Tell him he is Pele and we will stick him up front "

And we still need a striker

Pleased with our business this window. Trust in Dougie who's had Wharton on his radar for a while. New boys should strengthen the team quite significantly.

So, Johnstone stays. I'm pleased about that - hope he is.

Biggest concern for the rest of the season is the potential fragility of Olise and Eze. Can they stay injury free?

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.
