He was OK in midfield for a game or two but the cup game at home to Everton exposed how little he can give offensively, as a centre back he looks OK but every time he makes a mistake it seems to lead to a goal far too often, and as a right back the other night he answered the question why he was not put there earlier. Don't like to be negative but I think this is the one buy Vieira got wrong, his recruitment was excellent otherwise - he's had plenty of chances but I now regretfully have to conclude that he is poor, I prefer Riedewald.

Anyone but Riedewald.

You have answered the question, why Roy picks the same players, as the others in the squad arent really good enough to start.

You have to laugh sometimes with the stuff on here.

Eddie Howe converts Joelinton from a misfiring striker to dynamic midfield player and he's a tactical genius.

Hodgson experiments with Richards as a DM and it's a square peg in a round hole.

In actual fact, the midfield berth for Joelinton was found by accident when Newcastle went down to 10 men against Norwich after 9 mins and they had to shuffle their team around.Jolinton performed well and the rest as they say is history.

He was s*** up front which was perhaps a clue that he wasn't a striker.

It wasn’t that long ago everyone on here was clamouring for Richards to be played at right back ahead of Clyne or Ward. We really should just leave it up to the professionals to put the team out whether you like Roy or not.

Richards doesn't seem to have quite the skillset for midfield. A better option would have been Ward - but obviously he's injured. Arguably, a lot of central defenders can play as an anchor in defence but not really Richards as he doesn't have the passing range. At best he can break up attacks - which he did ok at.

He played wide in a front three at Hoffenheim and had spent most of his career out wide rather than as an out-and-out No 9.
It was Steve Bruce who played him as a No 9 at Newcastle.

In case you aren't aware this thread is about Chris Richards and not Newcastle players
