My step father was named Basil but hated it, so went through his life telling people his name was Barry. At his funeral, the repeated references to "Basil" caused confusion among all his friends and associates. His family thought Basil was a better name than Barry- a name which they thought of as beneath their self-inflated social-status I suspect.I'm sure there are no Basils anymore, are there?

I f***ing hate it, it's an absolutely awful name. My dad was called Ronald and his middle name was Barry. After he was born my grandparents decided they liked Barry better for some insane reason, it wasn't until his teens, when his mate somehow found out, that he realised what his actual name was. He was known as Ron by the time I came along but my grandparents always called him Barry, which was really confusing for me for Sunday lunches.
