I recently watched a primary school soccer match and one player, a forward, was mooted by the organiser, a teacher friend, as a player of potential. Knowing of my love of football and experience of watching Crystal Palace over the years, she asked my opinion.

Football is like all professions. Sometimes you don't have to be the most skillful to be the most successful. Neville brothers are a perfect example. Not the best full backs out there when they played but probably two of the most successful. Luck plays a part in everything in life.
Why would anyone chose to be a Seagull? The Eagle is a far superior creature. The Seagull lives under it's damp pier meekly looking out, blinded by the sheer quality of the Eagle's palace. |

And looks, if Beckham looked like Luke Chadwick would he be where he is now??? Personally think hard work is the key. Neville's would both put there body on the line and you can imagine they work their ar5es off in training. Ravel Morrison, all the talent but cant be ar5ed and goes from Man U down to West Ham then down to QPR in the championship.

At that age, physical development usually, although the kid might be very talented for his age. In truth the real quality of a male footballer cannot really be judged against his peers until the age of around 18-21 - Not just when his physical development has halted but also his peers. Its about more than height, at that age skeltal and muscular development are far more important (as universally kids are s**t at headers).

Well I played a bit, mainly left back (in the dressing room!). But whenever I had a go at goal it would always be straight at the goal keeper. I really do believe centre forwards have something else. Some could call it luck, but I s'pose you have to have a knack of knowing where to be to get that luck, if you get my meaning!

When I was a teenager there was a 12 year old who was scoring quite a few goals in local school matches and saturday junior football, but was deemed too lightweight to make the grade as a footballer. I went to many trails with him and thought he was ok, but nothing special. By the time he was 17 he had turned into a man mountain and became one of the best central defenders around and in many peoples opinions (including mine) could/should have played for England. His name is Billy Gilbert who made over 250 appearences for Palace. If someone had told me that was going to happen 40 years ago, i'd have laughed in their face.
