It seems to me that speed is the key to success these days, Getting to the ball first. Making breaks that catch the fullback on the hop. Tracking down the striker and clearing the ball.

Not so sure. Speed's an undeniable asset...but there's attributes i'd want in a striker before speed. Technical ability, vision, finishing (obviously) etc. Otherwise you end up with Cameron Jerome. I thought Agbonlahor was one of the quickest around, but i might have heard wrong.

a test carried out recently had Valencia as the worlds fastest!Agbonlahor and Lennon are up there I believe, but Ronaldo and Messi win with "ball at feet" speeds, Bale surely must be the quickest at both now. MLS player Marvel Wynn has a PB over 100m of 10.39 , Claudio Cannigia holds a 100m time of something close to 10 secs. Speed is useful to try and out-run an opponent, but it's not everything. Peter Taylor was the same. Don't confuse speed with the ability to out-position the opponent and then accelerate. Worth lots more. David Beckham was certainly not the quickest but had the ability to create a yard of space out wide and deliver telling crosses.

Teddy Sheringham was a carthorse, with the turning circle of a train, but he did alright.

Teddy Sheringham was a carthorse, with the turning circle of a train, but he did alright. Indeed but he thought quick. He was a very clever player and what he lacked in pace he made up with his head.A very good football brain.

I remember Wayne Andrews was quick. Useless, but quick.

no point in having pace if you can't finish. We've had plenty of fast strikers over the years that couldn't hit a barn door. Look at Murray - no pace but knows where the goal is. IMO it's better to know how to find space and the back of the net.

no point in having pace if you can't finish. Yannick Bolasie has the pace but the end product...... !
