the hire-and-fire economy is a rat race. After bar-steward employer after bar-steward employer, i decided that the future is to have clients and not another bar-steward employer. Happy now.

I used to work freelance.

At JP Morgan, when on call out, you were paid 1 hour for being on call and one hour when called. At Christmas, a hamper was added to the benefits.

At Lehman Bros; no pay for call out, no pay for being called. Whatever, in 2007 I volunteered to cover Christmas. No call out pay at all and no other benefits. Not even a thankyou.

The following Easter I was told to be on call again. I refused and was told there was no option - I was to do it. "Fair enough", I said, " but the bleeper will be switched off".

They were astounded when I declined the offer of a contract extension the following June.
I walked into another job in Streatham with 40% rate increase and no call out.

Lehmans were sh1t meat-marketers and I am so glad I got out 3 months before they went under in Sept 2008. And they can't sue me for libel either !!
