As soon as I saw the title of your topic I thought of Peter Jones, a great commentator. Others who I remember on the radio, not necessarily the commentator but worked beside them are Jimmy Armfield & Bryon Butler but where both great at what they did. I haven't listened to a football match on the radio for a while, just bits & pieces of it.

Personally I think punditry has come on leaps and bounds within only the last 5 years or so. Neville has taken it to the next level. Commentary for me is much the same as it ever was.
