OK, so what happened. Crashed his car on the day of his trial for sexual abuse of boys. So, suicide? Or maybe a rather more pernicious conspiracy. Is it possible others got to him to protect themselves?

The report I heard was that there were no other vehicles involved. He seemingly just crashed the car. Probably suicide, but I like the idea that perhaps there was some kind of supernatural intervention that took control of the car as retribution for his sins. Perhaps I've seen too many horror films lately.
