Yes, always think it must play on Punches mind that after scoring the goal, he could have taken Rooney out on the halfway line, on the lead up to the equaliser, hindsight is a wonderful thing of course, he might have got carded, but who knows. A card would have been a small price to pay. Man Utd proved that!

I recall Mark Hughes' equaliser in 1990 having been about 7 minutes from the end, so we can't blame Fergie Time for that one. It was naive defending, as was the case in 2016 when we should have taken it in turns to kick Rooney up in the air for the last 12 minutes. As someone else has posted, the death of Paul Nixon was at an original semi-final tie. Bright tried to chest a ball down on the half way line and it ran away from him. Rather than running back and trying to retrieve it he just stood there as Ince ran off with it and set up Hughes. I've never forgiven him for that moment of laziness. Watch it back and you'll see what i mean. Years later he was on a FA Cup highlights programme and the goal was replayed. All he said was we were 7 minutes away from winning - no mention of his role in the goal. Unbelievable.

Whenever I watch the 1990 goals I still scream at Nige to stay on his line (or stay on it - I can't remember which) but I know we could have won it. I was at both finals and their fans were scum. Unbelievable - if we'd have won I'd probably still be crying now!

They turned up like it was a league match. Late arriving, didn't sing and frankly acted like spoilt, ungrateful brats after winning the game. That LVG was sacked immediately afterwards shows that such arrogance comes from the top down. ...

Yes, both at Villa park, I was at the first game, it"s easy to forget we boycotted the replay, although not Paul Nixon, and Keanes intent on Southgate showed they were up for it,professionalism at its worst. I seem to remember we took about 4000 to the replay, although not there myself. I went to both games.. As much as the boycott of the replay was a protest the game was always going to be played and the players deserved some support which was why I went. We played so well in the first game and should of won. We gave away a really poor goal for their equaliser by Pallister to make it 2-2... The atmosphere was amazing that day. The replay was a total anti climax.. Back then United were that good that you only got one chance against them and we didnt take it in the 1st game so the replay they won at a canter really... Was a bizarre atmosphere with the murder of Paul Nixon during the first game and the fact there was only about 4000 of us... The stamp by Keame was naughty obviously but I'll admit Southgates tackle on him was naughty as well... Keane said sometime later that the reason he got so angry was he had had about 5 stitches put in a cut on his ankle at half time and southgate caught him right on the cut and it made him mad. The funniest thing about that whole sending off incident was the melee afterwards... If you watch closely you will see Eric Young walk past Dennis Irwin and pinch his ear... So childish but so funny!!
Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

The more dubious record from the weekend was probably this: This was Palace's first Premier League win against a team as many as three places above them in the table since November 2019. It goes to show how good we've got against the bottom 3. At least I know that pessimism I feel before playing the top 10 is well founded!
