Is there room for sentiment in football ?

I listened to the excellent 'Transfer Podcast' on Friday. Near the end, Jel Holyoake spoke (it seemed with some sadness.) about sentiment, or the lack of it, in professional football today. He mentioned specifically how he 'felt' for Peter Ramage, who had worked so hard with the team, to help us win promotion. And was so excited, and really looking forward to getting the chance to play in the Premier League. He happily signed a new contract, only to be excluded from Holloway's 25 man squad, and then be loaned out to Barnsley for the season. So...Is there room for sentiment in football ? I can recall clearly, our brief Premier League stay in 1997/98. Carlo Nash was desperate to play a Premier League match, in goal for Palace. But even after relegation was assured, Steve Coppell did not give him a game. He finally got his wish with Man City in 2000/01. Outside Palace, I can go back to the 1966 World Cup. Jimmy Greaves got injured, and Alf Ramsey brought in Geoff Hurst for the Quarter Final. Greaves was fit for the Final. Nearly every football fan in the country (outside West Ham.) were calling for the re-instatement of Greaves. Ramsey ignored all that, and played Hurst....The rest, as they say, is history.... The famous photograph of Jimmy Greaves standing in the tunnel,in his suit, while England paraded the World Cup around Wembley, is one of THE saddest football pictures.(Check it out.) Let's move to a more recent event.... The London Olympics... David Beckham (And I'm no fan of his.) had put in so much time and effort into helping London secure the 2012 Olympics. He stated how keen he was to be in the Great Britain Football Squad. He was overlooked. Surely Stuart Pearce could have found a spot for him, in the squad at least ? Maybe you can re-call an instance when sentiment came into play, and backfired ? Anyway, have anyone got an opinion on this ? Will the 'Sentiment issue' become a hot topic over the coming weeks/months regarding Speroni and Hennessey ? Your thoughts would be interesting. IS THERE ROOM FOR SENTIMENT IN FOOTBALL ?

Ramage carried himself with a lot of grace, I would have been furious that after playing a significant part in out promotion season, signing a new contract and then being left out for Injured Paddy Mac to be in the 25 who played no part. But, if we bring in better players than we have got already than can only be a better thing for the club providing the players are committed.

If you want to improve NO. But then you are banking on the skills of the Manager at the time. EG I would have kept all of lasts years squad and NOT blown them out so soon. Which was nearly our downfall so early. We now must wait and see if the 4 NEW lads get into the first 11 and make the TEAM better. Palace 13th 2017/18.

But then you are banking on the skills of the Manager at the time.
EG I would have kept all of lasts years squad and NOT blown them out so soon.
Which was nearly our downfall so early.
We now must wait and see if the 4 NEW lads get into the first 11 and make the TEAM better.

Perhaps there can be a case for it when there really isn't anything else to choose between two players, but how often does that happen? If we'd been sentimental, then Nigel Martyn wouldn't have replaced Perry Suckling, and we'd probably have gone down in 1990 without a cup final appearance. However, with Kevin Miller I thought that replacing Carlo Nash was always just justification for the transfer, and that Carlo was actually the better player. I don't know enough about Hennessey to know how he compares with Julian but I do think he is here to be his replacement, just not sure whether it is meant to be now or over time, perhaps at the end of the season when Jules contract ends. If they are close on ability then I do think it would be unfair on Julian on his current form to drop him, but if Hennessey is clearly the better player then there can't be room for sentiment. Then again, hopefully Hennessey won't just be played to justify the transfer, either.

Yet most people on here said before the season started that Delaney and Gabbidon weren't up to Premiership standard and should be jettisoned before the season started.

There's no sentiment in football or loyalty in my opinion. Of the Ramage situation I was not best pleased to hear that he wasn't in the 25 and somehow McCarthy got in so god knows how he felt when told he was going to Barnsley.
