I was painting an external wall 3 weeks ago and had to stop after loads of flying ants flew into the wall, When i had a shower there were loads in my hair too.

I actually only looked up the survey site for this year to see if I had imagined it a few weeks ago, but I'm none the wiser now people have to send in pictures of themselves covered in ants to prove they saw them.

I just read the wiki on nuptial flight. it contains the lines: Within a few days after they have emerged (enclosed) from the pupa case, males are "quickly converted into single-purpose sexual missiles. and During "the quick and violent mating," the male literally explodes his internal genitalia into the genital chamber of the queen and quickly dies Powerful stuff
