I always thought they were singing about Michael Jackson and his pet monkey bubbles. Whatever its bout its a naff song, they used to have a proper firm and yet sang a song about blowing bubbles and calling themselves irons which is part slang for a Brighton fan

Karen Brady probably missed a bargain because she could have picked up Fulham's MJ statue on the cheap. It would have looked good at their new gaff and could have been used as in-fill between the pitch and spectators. The following is attributed to Wikipedia (apologies, my curiosity finally got the better of me!). The song was originally written and composed around 1919 in America by Jaan Kenbrovin and John William Kellette. The tune was probably adopted by West Ham in the 1920s. At the time schoolboy soccer was extremely popular. In one of the east end school teams there was a fair haired lad named W. ( Billy ) J. "Bubbles" Murray, so called because of his distinct and almost uncanny resemblance to the boy in the famous painting by Millais entitled Bubbles. The painting had become well-known as it was used to advertise Pears soap, which was popular at the time.
